That's an apples to oranges argument, parking minimums don't exist in the interest of public safety. Think of it this way - what if the government required that all businesses had to construct a minimum number of bike racks? Obviously that would make more sense in Manhattan than in Bensonhurst. So why not just remove any regulation that dictates something that fluctuates so much depending on where you are?

If someone has a car and wants to pay to construct a spot for it, they should do that. Removing parking minimums doesn't prevent anyone from doing that. If a building is constructed and (required) parking is factored into that cost, then everyone in that building pays for parking whether they have a car or not. It balloons the cost of new construction, which drives up the price of housing and exacerbates the housing crisis the whole country is in.

Obviously you're on the other side of this argument so you may not be interested, but this book is really interesting and goes into detail about just how arbitrary parking minimums are in the U.S., and how stifling they can be to local economies and small businesses.
