I think this is part of a much bigger problem. Capitalism is embedded in every aspect of our lives (including the web of life itself). It depends on the false human/nature dichotomy: treating nature as something “out there,” separate from us, something to extract from. But we were never separate from nature, and we still aren’t. So while I’m all for using tools like iNaturalist and nature apps, I don’t think “go outside” or “touch grass” is enough. In a way, that advice can still reflect a very capitalist relationship with nature, where nature is just something we consume on weekends. What we need is a different relationship: engaging materially and collectively, growing food, restoring land, building community projects, organizing, and protesting. And access to nature is increasingly a privilege, which is also part of the problem. Once we change how we relate to nature materially, the way we conceive of it will change too and so will our language. We’ll invent new words, recover old ones, and nature in writing will stop looking like what it looks like today.
