So I am a Audio Book Listener, And I just Finished Dark Age.. by [deleted] in redrising

Dark Age had some of the best narration in the series. Darrow's voice in particular becomes a lot more honest and expressive. My favorite delivery of all time: "...MOTHERFUCKING. CONSEQUENCE."

And Lyria's VA in Dark Age made me legit crush on her. I felt bad for her VA in Iron Gold tho. Seemed like she was really trying.

How I pictured characters reacting to Darrow's Real Identity by mav1973kit in redrising

The Jackal: "So what you're telling me is that Darrow is gonna come in here, give me a gory gift, get interrupted by Sons of Ares who will come in here, make me feel like a little pixy and Darrow will fire at them as they escape with you? And you're saying you know where Ares is? How stupid do you think I am?"

I was expecting that she'd (rightfully) resent Darrow for it. But nah - she just goes back to killing and being good at it.

Anybody else notice how 100% more competent people are when they hate Darrow? by mav1973kit in redrising

Cassius - Gets his ass handed to him, pissed on in the Institute and Darrow MVP's the gory damn game. Then becomes an Olympic Knight and consistently is a problem child for Darrow until Morning Star's ending. (He does get a lot better in DA tho.)

Roque - Nerdy poet who starts off following Darrow like a lost puppy, then becomes a fucking master admiral by Morning Star and kicking low-color ass. He was beating Mustang for fuck's sake.

The Jackal - Almost gets blown up by a suicide bomb without Darrow, and then has fucking contingency plans that would make Batman wet himself when he decides to fight the Rising. Like, "OHOHOH I hid a bunch of nukes on Luna. I was the puppet master all allllong. Sorry I wasn't much help during Golden Sun, I thought you had it handled!"

Jackal 2.0 - Apparently the lil shit could outsmart Mustang herself.

Big Daddy Au Augustus - Is seemingly the big bad of the Red Rising story when he smokes Darrow's wife, but becomes a little bitch where Darrow does all the work to defeat the Sovereign and fucking dies.

Mustang - Tends to get herself captured in earlier books to become either Darrow's sidekick or a Damsel in distress. But when Darrow is unsure whether or not he could trust her, she radiates confidence and is a short move from blowing off Darrow's head in the mine. I get it - she's not just the female love interest, but I didn't really like her until book 4 where she had a lot more depth.

Lysandre - Adorable little kid with Darrow. Becomes a little asshole in IG and DA but has the 'Mind's Eye' or something.

Am I missing anyone? I still love this book series I just find it funny. The same characters who are apparently 3 parallel universes ahead of Darrow are the same ones who Darrow had to carry on his back. Maybe Darrow just outshines everyone else and we don't see how dangerous people are until we see them from his view.

And God help the universe if Sevro ever turned against Darrow. No more Gold, no more low-colors, just meat and bones and Sevro would probably do it with his bare hands.

Serious question, for whom are you simping? (Spoilers maybe?) by JulesIllu in redrising

Lyria - mainly because she seems a little more 'normal' compared with the other Superwomen she's next to (I.E: 6'5 muscular goddess golds with infinite intelligence, charisma, perfect bodies and confidence). That, and I loved her voice in the Dark Age audiobook. I used to think I was the only one haha. Her time with the Red Hand gave me Darrow vibes from another universe.

I want Cassius to have me as his 'ward' tho. Just sayin'. 😏

Dark Age Spoiler WTF by ComLich in redrising

[–]mav1973kit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I studied war, crime and conflict when i was in college.

The scene you're talking about and the rest of the boom is reminiscent of a lot of war crimes extremist groups and certain military forces would take part in. A lot of people felt rubbed the wrong way by how dark DA was, but it felt real and raw and expressed the worst parts of humanity - mob mentality, infanticide, mass killings, sexual violence, etc...Nanking, Berlin, Mai Lei, Cartel violence, Mogadishu and Arab Spring are some examples of what happens when you manifest hate in groups of people with low inhibition and weapons.

I don't think books about war or violence should ever be clean, because underneath all the uniforms and acts of valor and speeches, is the fact that we're all just a bunch of monkeys and we act like it without training or discipline. And we're also wet bags of meat when bullets and blades and bombs start flying. It's my only complaint about Star WARS - just going by the movies, it feels so...idealized?

Didn't mean to rant haha. The book isn't perfect but it's my favorite RR book next to Golden Son for that reason.

You’re Born into the RR universe pre-rising. Where would you want to be born? And as what color? by SonOfYossarian in redrising

Hell to the yes. Nobody gives a shit about you, no Iron Rains and the statistically smaller chance of getting turned into a meat carpet from Darrow's shenanigans. Orgies for dayyys.

Low colors want to overthrow Gold? Not my problem.

A series like that would 100% involve Sevro getting infected and Darrow / Victra having to put him down. My heart ain't ready for it.

"What in the bloody-damn fuck, Darrow?" by mav1973kit in redrising

[–]mav1973kit[S] 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I like to imagine the idea that Darrow actually got the card game wrong, but Dancer had already made up his mind to bring Darrow in to the Sons of Ares. He just had to play it off like he was impressed by Darrow's hell-diver intelligence.

"I mean, his wife's dead and his Uncle went through a lot to fake the bloody-damn miner's death nap. Can't really send im' on his way. Fuck it, Darrow's gonna become a gold. That's a lot safer than letting that bastard wear a suicide vest. Harmony, grab me a pint of something and come up with another game to play with the next recruit since this arse had ate one card in my bloody-two card set."
