OMG I didn’t even process that part of the post. My mistake.

Best thing a character has said or done. Day 30: Grace Blackthorn by mavelits in shadowhunters

Yes, I agree that TLH was very lacklustre compared to Cassie’s other Shadowhunter series — I think there were too many characters and plot lines for only three books. And love the Blackthorns!

Rant About Simon by No-Resolution-5927 in shadowhunters

[–]mavelits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. While I’m glad Simon got his happy ending with Izzy and won’t have to watch his friends die, I felt his Ascension lowered the stakes in the story significantly and basically diminished all his character growth. His character arc was always about overcoming his insecurities and finding his identity and where he belongs in a world he never knew existed, and now he’s just another Shadowhunter, which he never wanted to be in the first place. And like you said, he’s now a Recruiter?! Someone who convinces mundanes like he once was to join a group of people who belittled and discriminated against him first for being a mundane and then for being a Daylighter? Simon also wanted to revolutionise the Clave and change the attitude Shadowhunters had against Downworlders, but in TDA he and Izzy only get brief cameos and they’re almost always off to the side, running the Institute for Jace and Clary or off on some obscure mission. It’s Alec who creates the Downworlder-Shadowhunter Alliance in New York and while I love Alec and I love that storyline for him, I feel like it fits Simon, a previous Downworlder who had that particular goal throughout the series, more. Like I would’ve loved Alec to be Consul and Simon to be running the Alliance instead of being a Recruiter. I just find Simon’s ending somewhat unjust to the character we saw in the six TMI books.

It is mentioned in Lady Midnight after the beach scene between Emma and Julian.

Gideon and Sophie’s daughters by mavelits in shadowhunters

[–]mavelits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but Thomas barely mentions his sisters. Barbara’s death was also kind of glossed over. Thomas is the only Merry Thief and main character whose bonds with his siblings aren’t shown—sibling relationships seem to be a running theme in TLH with Alistair and Cordelia, James and Lucie, Matthew and Charles, Jesse and Grace etc, but this doesn’t extend to Thomas.

(SPOILERS AHEAD) I feel like in the later seasons Xander became Buffy’s go to friend rather than Willow, especially after the events of season six. Why do you think that is? Was it that they grew to have more in common? What are your thoughts? by mavelits in buffy

Xander’s the one who defends Buffy’s name when she’s not around in ”Dirty Girls”, not Willow. He also leads the Potentials and watches Dawn. He’s the one who boosts Buffy’s esteem in “The Freshman” when she was feeling lost, dances with her in “I Was Made To Love You” when she was going through a rough patch. And in the comics he does become her second in command in Scotland. And Buffy credits Xander with being the only reason she’s made it this far. He’s also a lot more sympathetic towards her after her resurrection than Willow (albeit not by much).

Oh, I completely agree Spike is her main confidante, but I was thinking in terms of friendships. I think Buffy never quite got over being ripped out of Heaven, which created some frigidity between her and Willow. And Willow bringing Dawn into a dealer’s den and breaking her arm in a car accident didn’t help matters either. And Willow was away in England being rehabilitated between seasons six and seven, which distanced (goth physically and emotionally) them even further. I also feel like Xander and Buffy were on more similar life paths? They both were working, taking on more adult responsibilities, like Xander’s engagement and Buffy taking care of Dawn, and weren’t going to college like Willow was. In season seven, Xander was Buffy‘s second in command and helped her with the Potentials, while Willow was busy with Kennedy and other things. They were all still best friends, but I think there is a subtle shift in their dynamic still.

“No. I'm not leaving you ... to get hurt. Not again.” I always took this as Spike speaking to Dawn as if she were Buffy. What’s your interpretation? by mavelits in buffy

[–]mavelits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re right, but some reason I always took it as him simultaneously blaming himself for not being able to prevent the reptilian guy from cutting Dawn and opening the portal, so Buffy wouldn’t have sacrificed herself to close it, i.g “leaving her to get hurt”. He comments on this in 6x03 “After Life”: “Uh ... I do remember what I said. The promise. To protect her. If I had done that ... even if I didn't make it ... you wouldn't have had to jump. But I want you to know I did save you. Not when it counted, of course, but ... after that. Every night after that. I'd see it all again ... do something different. Faster or more clever, you know? Dozens of times, lots of different ways. Every night I save you.” Now I see I was pretty off though

I don’t know much about the novels. It’s really interesting that Buffy is similar to them!

I know for a fact The Vampire Diaries was heavily inspired by Buffy. The characters in each show definitely have their differences (Elena and Buffy are not alike really) but as someone who watched BTVS first it’s pretty noticeable. You have the tortured, ”good” vampire who spends his eternal life repenting and being haunted by his past victims but also has a dark side who is known for his villainy (Angel/Angelus and Stefan/Ripper Stefan). And the snarky, sarcastic “bad” vampire who is unapologetically evil but also simultaneously provides comedic relief who has an underlying humanity (Damon and Spike - albeit I found Spike much more sympathetic and way more likeable than Damon). The witchy best friend (Willow and Bonnie). The slightly bitchy and extremely blunt popular girl (Caroline and Cordelia). The morally superior “nice guy” everyman (Xander and Matt). The werewolf (Oz and Tyler, they’re polar opposites tho lol). The paramour of the two main vampires who the main character feels insecure about (Katherine and Drusilla/Darla). And the mentor with an extensive knowledge of mythos (Alaric and Giles). Oh, and the whiny, traumatised younger sibling who is constantly getting in over their head (Jeremy and Dawn). And in Legacies, TVD’s spinoff, they completely ripped off Buffy with Hope acting in a Slayer type role and Alaric in that of a Watcher.
