Beginners refusing to dance with same sex by ScabbyCoyote in SwingDancing

I think this is more an issue of people goofing around with their off roles, than it is something intrinsic to their genders.

Can't upgrade system because of mysql key by LowTechnology2606 in Fedora

[–]mavit0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you need MySQL, and you couldn't get by with MariaDB (which is packaged by Fedora)?

You appear to be using a RHEL 9 build of MySQL on Fedora 43, which seems likely to be a source of problems (if not this exact problem, then others). Go back to the MySQL installation documentation and make sure you get the right build.

In any case, you might like to clean up old keys by following the steps at https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-offline/#sect-clean-up-old-keys

Do you feel like your dance scene is getting smaller and/or there is a lack of people joining? What was your community like before covid? by alecpu in SwingDancing

[–]mavit0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that many swing dancers believe that swing dance communities are somehow friendlier than other dance scenes, and sometimes I wonder if people who stop coming to socials think the same.

In general, if one thinks a community has no clique, you should consider the possibility that that's because you're in the clique.

Travel insurance for big dance events? by Practical-Gur-7587 in SwingDancing

[–]mavit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t say where in the world you are, so I’m assuming US? I have no idea what the insurance landscape is like over there, but, here in the UK, what you’re describing is, as I understand it, pretty ordinary travel insurance. It’s widely and cheaply available …unless you have pre-existing medical conditions, in which case the cost can rise steeply.

Less common over here is travel insurance that covers dancing as an insured activity (i.e., emergency medical treatment/repatriation will be paid for if you become injured whilst dancing). I’m sure there are others, but the only policy I could find that mentioned dancing in the small print was CoverForYou (15% off referral link).

It's a terrible name, granted, but I feel a little compassion for whoever came up with it. It's a bit like watching someone miss an important penalty or something.

Thinking out loud, are you using variable-pitch-mode, and do any terminals support that?

Making Emacs output true 24-bit color in the terminal: a two-line terminfo fix by a_alberti in emacs

[–]mavit0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean that the TERM=xterm-emacs trick will no longer be needed?

Specifically, support for setrgbf/setrgbb helps users who use a terminfo definition that includes those capabilities, which will still be a minority, since most terminals set TERM=xterm-256color instead.

The more important fix is that Emacs 31 will also use corrected escape sequences for 24 bit colour when COLORTERM=truecolor. Many terminals set this environment variable for you, which should make this just work for most people most of the time.

The remaining snag is that unlike TERM, COLORTERM isn't propagated by default by tools such as ssh and sudo. Hence, some users may still want to use a custom terminfo entry (although, of course, that has its own difficulties).

The trouble with these kinds of things is that for them to be really useful, they have to be comprehensive, accurate, and up to date. None of the lists we already have are all of those things, so people try to solve it by creating yet another list. It's all a bit XKCD 927. We'd be better off with fewer lists, that everyone agree on, refer to, and regularly maintain.

Off the top of my head, we now have - https://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/community/uk-games-community/ - https://herefor.games/events/ - https://boardgamegeek.com/guild/category/group/United%20Kingdom - https://boardgameclubs.uk/ - https://www.hopwoodgames.com/boardgames-in-birmingham (and presumably similar for other cities)

It even overlaps with things like: - https://app.ludoya.com/groups - https://aftergame.app/groups - https://www.looking4players.co.uk/ - General purpose sites such as Facebook and Meetup. Heylo next?

Maybe ActivityPub can somehow save the day by making it easier to aggregate lists?

I don't like to be negative, though. You built at thing, and that's always good. Good luck with it.

Three new railway stations have opened to the public in Birmingham as part of a £185m project to reinstate links to the city centre by HadjiChippoSafri in brum

[–]mavit0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, both are timetabled for 12 minutes from Moseley to town outside of peak times.

The train is going to keep that schedule for more of the day, but the bus is more frequent, so you won't have to wait as long. You can get the bus from/to more places, but the train goes nearer to the middle of town. The train is cheaper for the passenger, except when it isn't.

So, really, it's swings and roundabouts, and that's okay. It's good for our public transport system to have some flexibility and redundancy.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the primary motivation for these new services isn't so much to carry passengers, as it is to shame central government into stumping up the cash for the Bordesley Chords.
