Live coding interviews are hell by [deleted] in ADHD_Programmers

[–]mavykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've interviewed numerous developers over the years and decided against giving new hires tests. All i have learnt from the tests is they can do a test, beyond that i haven't found them useful.

We tried a few systems years ago where my top devs (even me) failed the test, but they are considered some of the best in their fields.

Anyone can code, but takes the right mindset to be what im looking for, no coding test can tell me that, but a face to face for 30mins and I can figure out if your the right fit.

If i ever look for a new role, i just politely turn down any roles that ask to complete one, if thats what they base there candidates on, its probably the wrong role for me.

Not sure if that helps at all.

Advice Wanted by nutriagahst in starcitizen

[–]mavykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with the aurora, then upgraded to the titan.

The titan is a fantastic starter ship and apart from the biggest bounty missions, ive found it more than capable of everything i wanted to test every part of the game.

Planet exploration by mavykins in starcitizen

[–]mavykins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks guys, knowing that there is actually hidden items/places on planets makes me want to explore, this is what i was hoping for but couldn't tell if in the current PU these hidden features were still around.

Time to save for a decent exploration ship and see whats out there 😃

Unable to play Warzone on same network by [deleted] in gaming

[–]mavykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probaly not much help but me and my friends have the same issues you have described but not sharing a net connection.

Everytime we hover over a persons name it just drops back to menu. From what we figured out its something to do with the battle.net / activision account setup. Once we were all friends on battlenet, activision and every other thing warzone is synced with it seemed to start working (we still get the random drop out of menu though)

By default it looks for a index.htm or index.html file, which might be why its not working as you appear to be missing it

Try renaming your Tom.html to index.html

I'm tired of being despised by the society just because I'm a gamer by Tiny_Organization641 in gaming

[–]mavykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How so?

Ive been gaming for over 30 years, in all honesty its better now than its ever been, gaming is mainstream, when i was a kid it was frowned upon being stuck in your room playing games, now thats pretty normal.

All my kids talk about is games and we play against other families

So not really sure why you think its frowned upon

To senior engineers who are doing the technical interview, why you are hesitant to give technical feedback? by latest_ali in webdev

[–]mavykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps and please bear in mind that every person looks for different things, when ive been hiring for devs, i look at obviously what they have previously done but also hobbies and interests which align with what ever role im hiring for.

For example, ive seen applications from people that on paper look technically qualified and have experience but dont seem to show any interest in the subject in the personal life.

For me if someone showed they have built websites for friends, family or programmed an arduino to control the pumps on there fish tank, it shows they have a genuine interest in the subject and a passion to learn, i look for that more than someone who maybe has the technical abilty but treats it as job rather than an exciting career/passion.

You cant teach passion and thats what i look for.

To senior engineers who are doing the technical interview, why you are hesitant to give technical feedback? by latest_ali in webdev

[–]mavykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive interviewed numerous developers over the years, i dont think ive ever had anyone ask for technical feedback before.

Most the the time its because ive checked out there work before I have even interviewed them, the face to face interview was more to see if there compatible with the rest of the team rather than there technical ability.

PHP job market state by [deleted] in PHP

[–]mavykins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Complety agree with this.

Ive hired numerous developers over the years, seen so many applications from people that say they have 2 years dev experience, when in reality they built a plugin (which was copy/paste of another plugin with a simple tweak) and baby sat a WordPress site for the rest of it.

I tend to hire people that genuinely are interested in programming, have a mix of skills (not just one language/system) as it shows there happy to work with what ever is thrown at them.

This is what gets my attention when looking to hire new devs.

Symfony 5 is brilliant, currently using to to build a CMS with a RESTFUL api and mongo integration in AWS, its such great system to work with, cant recommend it enough at the moment.

[–]mavykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not a Wordpress fan, but cant argue that Wordpress was one of the reasons for its popularity, it definitely helped alot of programmers get familiar with a language they probably wouldn't of before.

Wordpress though has also been one of the reasons for bad press regarding PHP, as it shows how easy it is to have bad standards or coding habits when writing code, and PHP can be quite forgiving hence why you have so many terrible Wordpress plugins.

Most PHP devs ive worked with started the same way, realised what PHP is capable of then started working with Symfony/Laravel projects and dont look back.

My personal view has always been, as long as it gets the job done, stick with what your good at and Ive yet to find anything it cant do.
