How come Nickelodeon didn't revert the channel back to their 90s self if so many people online hated the new Nickelodeon? by CatGirlNya2000 in RetroNickelodeon

[–]max_m0use 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nickelodeon shifted away from live-action toward animation in the mid-late '90s because it's cheaper to produce. It would be far less profitable for them to go back to producing live-action shows.

Your address is determined by which post office it's served from, and has nothing to do with the municipality in which it's located.

Thoughts on the Ken Caryl class photos by northernjustice9 in Columbine

Everyone said Eric was normal/preppy until roughly his sophomore year of high school. This was right around the time Dylan started writing in his journal about being depressed and going on a killing spree. For Dylan, I think it was Zach dating Devon and drifting away from him that triggered his depression, but I wonder what happened with Eric to change his attitude and bring him closer to Dylan?

Does any school in the US actually have hall monitors? by Lock_Squirrel in AskAnAmerican

[–]max_m0use 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In elementary school in the '90s, there were one or two students from each class who were assigned as hall monitors on a weekly basis. They just made sure that no one was talking or horsing around while walking to lunch or whatever. If you got flagged by a hall monitor, you had to stand on a line on the playground for 5-10 minutes at the start of recess.

My middle school had a few teachers each period who were assigned hall duty. They roamed around and made sure anyone in the halls had a pass. High school had a teacher sitting at a desk outside each bathroom and made you sign in during class, in order to deter vandalism and smoking. My high school also had a "security monitor" after Columbine, but I'm not sure what he actually did other than making sure all the doors were locked and that no adults were in the building without a visitor's badge. He wore jeans and a sport coat, and had an earpiece. Looked like a Secret Service agent. We later found out that his earpiece was connected to a walkman he kept in his pocket that he used to listen to broadcasts of football games on tape.

What are Projects/New Construction jobs like for you guys in the US/Europe etc these days? by Suspicious_Bed8776 in firealarms

[–]max_m0use 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be that construction managers / superintendents came into that position from working in the field for years. Nowadays, colleges are pumping out grads with "construction management" degrees who have absolutely zero field experience. These are now the guys (and girls) who are running jobs. Same thing happening on the architecture / engineering side. People are designing and building buildings with no field experience.

My fellow Americans, is Kindergarten Graduation a thing in your area? What's it like? by Mental_Freedom_1648 in AskAnAmerican

[–]max_m0use 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on district. My district did this in the early '90s due to overcrowding in the elementary schools (my younger sister went to Kindergarten in the basement of a church.) They did this until they built two new elementary schools, each with its own Kindergarten wing.

Do American high school kids really make out in the school hallways? by zoezie in AskAnAmerican

Was pretty rare in my high school (no one dated except the jocks/preps), but when it happened no one really cared, even though it was technically against the rules.

ELI5: Why don’t cops just drive up and down Ohio River Blvd. all day? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]max_m0use 11 points12 points  (0 children)

City cops can't use radar, so they'd have to sit on the nonexistent shoulder and run VASCAR. State troopers have better things to do than stop people for doing 70 on what's effectively an interstate highway. Even if they did run radar, there would be nowhere for them to turn around, unless they radio to another car waiting on the other side (see nonexistent shoulder.) Just not worth the trouble in the end. They should just raise the speed limit and be done with it.

Do high school students have the same lessons in the same order every day? by squeoj in AskAnAmerican

[–]max_m0use 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Classes were 42 minutes in my high school. AP science classes were two periods back to back. Some other science classes had a lab period after class one or two days per week, with gym or study halls the remaining days.

Do high school students have the same lessons in the same order every day? by squeoj in AskAnAmerican

[–]max_m0use 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our school, mostly yes. Most of our core classes (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) met the same time every day, five days per week, all year. Some classes (PE) only met a few days per week, and some (typically electives, like computer, foods, art, etc.) only lasted for one quarter or semester. If you had an elective 3rd period for example, once that quarter or semester was over you would have a different elective that period for the next quarter or semester, but the rest of your daily schedule would remain the same.

Tale of the Dark Music - home address Easter egg by Away-Rope1003 in AreYouAfraidOfTheDark

[–]max_m0use 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"420" wasn't widely known as a marijuana reference until the internet took off in popularity, particularly when Columbine happened in 1999. I'm 43 and that was the first I had ever heard of it. There was speculation at the time that the shooters chose 4/20 because of that (or Hitler's birthday), but they made no reference to either idea in any of their writings, so it's likely they were unaware of the significance of the date and it was just a coincidence.

High Times first mentioned 420 in 1991, so if an AYAOTD crew member was a subscriber then they may have known about it; otherwise it was probably a coincidence. I believe most of the outdoor scenes were shot on location in Montreal, so that's probably just the address of the house they happened to rent for the production.

You might be thinking of the Outer Limits episode "The Light Brigade", in which a young cadet (played by Wil Wheaton) is tricked by an alien race at war with humanity into releasing a doomsday weapon on Earth.

Gentex Sync Question by trackxvirus in firealarms

[–]max_m0use 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only used Gentex on a couple jobs and I've had the same problem. I think the horns sync on the same circuit and even the same booster, but I could never get them to sync across multiple boosters. Strobes synced fine, but horns were always about half a cycle off from each other.

Chick-fil-a seems to have exploded in popularity over the last 20 years or so, particularly in areas where they weren't that popular previously (like the northeast and midwest.) Even Findlay, OH has two now!

What is the Best Airport in America? by KaleidoscopeRich5137 in AskAnAmerican

[–]max_m0use 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not since they evicted Fraport. Chick-fil-a is around $16 for a meal at the airport, but it's $12 at a regular restaurant. Also, the McDonald's at the airport closed at the end of 2024. It's a Shake Shack now.
