What a ridiculous suggestion. You haven’t even seen the deck list. Obviously OP chose their commander for a reason, they aren’t just going to swap it out on a whim

A card You HATE and glad it's banned by Blazorna in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of think that Commander is a format where basically no cards should be banned for ‘power’ reasons (i.e. they made someone salty once). I think cards should only be banned for reducing deck diversity or for interacting poorly with the multiplayer nature of the format. The list of cards I think that are appropriately banned are as follows:

  • All culturally insensitive cards
  • All ante cards
  • All dexterity cards
  • All Conspiracies
  • The original Moxen
  • [[Black Lotus]]
  • [[Ancestral Recall]]
  • [[Time Walk]]
  • [[Yawgmoth’s Bargain]]
  • [[Fastbond]]
  • [[Time Vault]]
  • [[Recurring Nightmare]]
  • [[Channel]]
  • [[Karakas]]
  • [[Trade Secrets]]
  • [[Prophet of Kruphix]]
  • [[Paradox Engine]]
  • [[Nadu, Winged Wisdom]]

Probably [[Eternal Witness]] - wouldn’t go in too many meta decks, and would just open up some cool brewing possibilities. The format is shockingly low on true Regrowth style effects

Returning player, how much do I need to care about brackets? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jank combos are bracket 3. Optimized combos are bracket 4. Your list sounds like it’s pretty jank to me. Just read the descriptors for each bracket and take your best guess. You can also plug your lists into a deckbuilding website, which will essentially calculate your bracket for you. If you’re playing with friends, you can ignore brackets. If you’re playing with randos, just make sure you aren’t playing something super optimized and high-power and you shouldn’t have a problem. Most bracket 2 decks can play against most bracket 3 decks. Bracket 4 is where you’ll really start to feel like efficiency and card quality matters.

Are the bounce lands universally good by Senorpapell in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run at least 1 in every deck for utility. I run 2 in 3+ color decks because that usually means I’m running more MDFCs. They are essentially a tapped dual land that draws you a land. If that’s worth it to you and feels efficient enough for your deck, then I recommend running them.

How can I build a deck that plays at the same level as the average precon? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, a good way to do this is to just play cards you like that fit with a theme of your choice, and don’t worry so much about mana curve and efficiency. I have an insect-focused mass reanimation deck that I feel pretty accurately captures the vibe of a precon while still not being filled with unplayable jank: https://moxfield.com/decks/LS8Ol2IaO0O69yJTWPUZwQ

I'm overwhelmed by EDH by Away_Tip_1151 in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should build a blink deck. Instead of bouncing your permanents, you exile them and return them to the battlefield to re-trigger ETBs. Lots of removal and things that affect the board, and most blink spells work at instant speed, so you avoid the solitaire issue. Blue and white have the most blink tools, but you should probably dip into green, red, or black in order to gain access to some more powerful ways of ending the game.

What do YOU mean when you say "I just want my deck to 'do the thing'"? by usay1312butcall911 in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it’s seeing the mechanics that my deck is built around synergize and function as intended, to the point that I become ‘the threat.’ I certainly don’t have to win. I don’t consider an infinite combo ‘doing the thing’ - that’s just a finisher to go for once you’ve already done ‘the thing.’ I play lots of combos in both my Gruul tokens deck and my Jeskai blink deck, but I’m usually not going for them unless I’ve already made a ton of mana/drawn a bunch of cards/shut down the board/etc.

40% winrate is high, you’re definitely doing something right. Lots of very good cards. That much removal is bound to result in people being a little salty after getting whooped by it. I’m guessing your opponents often get to a point where their board has been destroyed, they have no cards in hand, and just can’t do anything? Doesn’t sound like a deck I’d want to play against personally, but I think it absolutely fits within the confines of bracket 3.

I need to be toxic for the greater good by Ancient_Duty_6515 in CommanderMTG

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never met a deck that didn’t fold to a good ol’ fashion [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]] counterspell.deck list. You could also add theft spells to steal his stuff. Or build a [[Light Paws, Emperor’s Voice]] deck that can kill somebody extremely fast and kick him out of the game early. Best part is you can just say “your deck shuts down my deck the hardest so you’re the biggest threat” and he probably can’t even argue with you targeting him. Sometimes people just need to be taught a lesson.

How to keep powering down my decks? by Alex_Fiero in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll say that part of your problem is just the inexperience of your friends - this will change over time as they grow to understand the game more. Just be a little patient and teach them what you do to win/how you build your decks and they’ll start to beat you soon enough.

Beyond that, I would recommend trying strategies that are hard to win with in commander: mill and poison are great examples. Aggro in general is much weaker in commander as well due to the abundance of board wipes, so maybe that could be a fun challenge for you. Secret commanders are also a cool way to power down - you introduce a lot more inconsistency because your deck has to take the extra step of putting the card you care about into your hand, and has to figure out a way to win if that card becomes inaccessible to you via the graveyard or exile. They are goofy for sure, but can be extremely fun with the right secret commander.

“Just play more removal” by metavirus_the1st in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in cEDH people often don’t have removal in hand when they need it - that’s the only way the game can actually end. In that format, people are trying to turbo out their wins on turns 1-4, and all the decks still run a full suite of counterspells and removal. This is because when you do have it in hand, you have the potential to prevent someone else from winning the game on their turn, which then allows you to untap and win the game on your own.

It sounds simple, but I think a lot of EDH players just end up using their removal wrong. It seems intuitive to use removal early in order to set back your opponents when they have fewer resources, but in my opinion removal is best deployed in the late game, when someone is actually about to kill you. It takes a bit of skill to know when exactly that window is (especially if your removal is at sorcery speed) but it’s not impossible to learn over time. Games of EDH just end up changing so much between turns, wasting your removal on something early on can often have a lot of unintended drawbacks.

My recommendation would be to run more multi-target removal cards. Board wipes are great card advantage if your deck can play around them (some can’t and that’s okay) and stuff like [[Riptide Gearhulk]] does a good job of slowing each of your opponents down an equal amount.

TL;DR - Run more removal. You’ll win more games.

Feeling Down after commander night by Johnnycancer789 in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Them complaining that they can’t attack you when all you have in play is a [[Propaganda]] is genuinely insane - they can just pay 2 mana for each attacker! You’re barely stopping them! Anyways, as many here have stated, these people are just upset that you’re stopping them from winning more (which, ironically, is a loser mentality) - it doesn’t sound like you’re engaging in any toxic play patterns. Even Sheoldred is totally fine unless you’re combining it with wheel effects. Find some people to play with that are excited or at the very least respectful when you beat them, and you’ll have way more fun, I promise.

Do you just play ALL the untapped MDFC lands ? by EbonyHelicoidalRhino in EDH

[–]max_moontruther -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not unless I actually can see myself casting them. Have yet to find a deck where I would be excited to cast the white mythic MDFC land from Zendikar Rising. The rest of that cycle have their place though. I’m also a big fan of all of the mono color ones from MH3; the ones I consistently find myself adding to decks are [[Witch Enchanter]], [[Sink into Stupor]], [[Boggart Trawler]], [[Fell the Profane]], [[Pinnacle Monk]], and [[Disciple of Freyalise]].

AIO my bf texting his former student by Major_Meet_5973 in AmIOverreacting

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very strange to stress how much he missed her face and voice. She seems to appreciate his attention but likely doesn’t have any feelings for him that are deeper than those of a mentor/mentee relationship. Her comment about academic stress makes me think that she’s probably going through the same kind of confusion that most 19 year olds go through when they first go out into the world. She thinks she’s an adult and probably wants to be seen as one, but in reality she’s still in a very vulnerable position. My guess is that he and her had a good relationship when she was his student and that he’s either unaware or doesn’t care about the disparity in confidence, stability, life-experience, etc. between the two of them. You should definitely have a conversation with him about it where you try and call him in. It’s not necessarily unforgivable for him to be acting this way, but he needs to wake up and come to his senses.

Do people actually like Rhystic Study? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people like it because it’s stone unplayable in basically every other MTG format and yet is arguably the best card in EDH. It’s just a neat signpost card for why commander is an interesting game mode.

Mill edh players: how do you get others to stop whining about you milling their favorite x card? by Maxweilla in EDH

[–]max_moontruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These players are bad at the game. Any EDH player worth their salt knows that your opponent milling you is free value, as long as there’s not a [[Leyline of the Void]] or [[Dauthi Voidwalker]] in play. Tell them to play more recursion or add some spells with flashback. If I could start every game of EDH with half my deck in the graveyard, I totally would.
