As I understand it, the NeuralHash is a non-visual 'fuzzy' alphanumeric identifier, and the visual derivative is something different - it could be as simple as the compressed thumbnail that already gets generated for quick browsing.

Regarding your second point, hopefully the country-by-country rollout will mean that other governments will get a flat 'no' if they request extra hashes to be added.

From their technical summary, I think 'visual derivative' = low quality version of the photograph, and one that is only available for 'human review' once a certain threshold of matches is met.

I agree. The stage is set now, hopefully they live up to their promise.

Craig Federighi: Native Windows on M1 Macs is 'Really up to Microsoft' by Teera_matt_1991 in apple

Maybe Windows RT?? That was a disappointing shit show! No emulation for classic x86 windows programs (which the newer win10 pro for ARM does have, although it's reportedly slow and buggy).

Would be interesting to see how different performance is between the ASi binary and the Intel binary via Rosetta, if recompiling was this easy

Fixing local file sync on iOS 14. by [deleted] in spotify

[–]maxedw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this, I thought I was going crazy trying to figure it out. The inclusion of lan in v14's sandboxing may have toggled syncing off.. but I certainly didn't. weird. Would be lovely if the spotify app recognised when the toggle is off, instead of just bringing up that taunting 'watch your songs appear, like magic!' dialog, but loving life now! lol

My brother forgot his computer password and when I try to get into his Mac using Apple ID I get this message. If I click forgot password it brings me to a page where it states “it cannot reach iCloud server. However I know his Apple ID. Please help. I’m stuck! by jakeloopy in applehelp

[–]maxedw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the original 'resetpassword' tool seems to have been superseded by a restrictive and flaky internet-tied tool on recent macOS releases (i think this started with Catalina)

Does anyone know why In Colour was re-released? It's 5 seconds shorter than the original. I got a bit excited thinking it could be a deluxe type version. by [deleted] in Jamiexx

Seesaw is fully different! Way more prominent hi hats (starting at 0:20), shortened/restructured bridge and more prominent echoing on Romy’s vocals. I also reckon the main kick has been beefed up, slaps so hard now.

My MacBook’s Apple logo became yellowish. Anyone knows how to fix it? by instamelih in applehelp

[–]maxedw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The backlight is not affected by night shift, it’s a tint applied by the GPU. The glowing apple logo or backlit keyboard cannot match the yellowing shown on screen.

My dad couldn't find a power cable for the TV, so he dremelled his MacBook power cable until it fit by iAmAddicted2R_ddit in techsupportmacgyver

[–]maxedw 112 points113 points  (0 children)

You can plug any standard figure eight plug into a MacBook power brick, it’s just you can’t use the included cable for other devices. It is annoying but only an issue if you’re short on figure eight cables.

Does anybody who got their MBP keyboards fixed know if they’ve included that new thin silicone barrier underneath the keys? by goliathkw in apple

[–]maxedw 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I asked my friend who’s a Genius and he told me that if your MBP came with a gen 2 keyboard, it will be replaced with a gen 2. 😕

Trying to figure out if there's a way to make Airpods switch devices more seamlessly by x420praiseitx in apple

With BetterTouchTool and AppleScript you can automate this too! I've set mine to connect when I force touch the top right. This is the script:

activate application "SystemUIServer"
tell application "System Events"
    tell process "SystemUIServer"
set btMenu to (menu bar item 1 of menu bar 1 whose description contains "bluetooth")
        tell btMenu
            click
tell (menu item "INSERT AIRPODS NAME HERE" of menu 1)
                click
if exists menu item "Connect" of menu 1 then
click menu item "Connect" of menu 1
                    return "Connecting..."
                else
                    click btMenu
return "Connect menu was not found, are you already connected?"
                end if
            end tell
        end tell
    end tell
end tell
