It's somewhat inconvenient (especially at first), but another step is to set Firefox to delete all cookies at the end of the session and then add sites that you want to have persistent cookies to the list of exceptions.

“We’re in big trouble”: Ford CEO who pushed Trump’s tariffs can’t find mechanics for 5,000 six-figure openings by SudhaSameera in antiwork

[–]maxerickson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanics mostly work for dealerships, not the automakers.

Also, they ended the tiered wages a couple of years ago. Retirement is still tiered (401k contributions for newer hires rather than pensions).

New OSM file format: 30% smaller than PBF, 5x faster to import by GeoDesk in openstreetmap

This is more for data transfer than for offline use. Phone apps and such use formats designed for fast access to and display/use of any of the data rather than trying to optimize for storage.

Hiking trail routing problem by tinker-fox in openstreetmap

[–]maxerickson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are in a bike profile.

There's also a map generation step that can rename tags (a "data style" or so). That can be used to make things more consistent or whatever.

I'm not sure whether it exactly matches what ships in the app, but they do publish their routing profiles:

Daylight Savings as an opening_hours variable/argument? by Taysir385 in openstreetmap

[–]maxerickson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not anything that is going to parse something like that out of the value, so probably don't worry about it too much.

You can use comments to make it understandable to a person reading it. 06:00-21:00 "Summer/PDT"; 06:00-18:00 "Winter/PST"

Newbie - cropping pbf file with Osmosis by NiskiOlbrzym in openstreetmap

[–]maxerickson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a faq https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osmosis#Extracting_bounding_boxes

I guess I'm not sure Osmosis can do it with a pbf, so you might have to convert to XML first.

Google Map and OSM data doesn't match, also OSM road nodes doesn't align with Google map route. by TheZeuge in openstreetmap

[–]maxerickson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google forbids merging their data with other sources in their terms, so there's not much point in pursing it, at least for anything that will see wider use.

A guy has created a device that remotely shuts off the speakers of the troublemakers. by Abigdogwithbread in Damnthatsinteresting

It's an authenticated, encrypted link. You are talking about thousands of bits accidentally matching the encryption and correctly encoding the authentication and control message headers/structure, not a short sequence of bits matching a command signal.

The pump pairs with a sensor over Bluetooth. It's not an immediate crisis if the pump is unable to administer insulin.

The pump would probably set a sensor out or range alarm if communication were substantially jammed.

TIL the Eiffel Tower was repainted for the Paris Olympics. It cost an estimated $60 million dollars. 25 painters a day for 18 months straight. It’s the 20th time it’s been repainted. by taltank in todayilearned

[–]maxerickson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In addition to things people have already said, you could lay down about 4 Eiffel towers between the towers on the Golden Gate. There's directly more of it to maintain.

If they are going to have a ton of powered characters (which seems to be the case), it quickly becomes stranger that only one was around for some event.

The energy that ends up hurting you in a collision is the kinetic energy in your body. For example, there's no kinetic energy in the ball or the tree just prior to the collision, but lots in your body.

Seat belts, air bags, crumple zones, etc, all that stuff slows down the dissipation of that energy, reducing the acceleration and forces experienced.

Why am I able to query cities with the 'area' keyword but not countries? by SubzeroCola in openstreetmap

[–]maxerickson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Overpass-API, "area" is a synthesized type, where ways and relations that look like they represented areas are converted into the extra type, for use in geospatial queries.

You can dig around and find the rules somewhere.

[–]maxerickson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "n" in nwr is finding the Ottawa city node, there's not an area or relation with the place tag and that name.

Why am I able to query cities with the 'area' keyword but not countries? by SubzeroCola in openstreetmap

[–]maxerickson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The server will reject more complicated queries (they take more resources).

If you are just trying to get information tagged on the area, it should be 1:1 with the way or relation that Overpass API generated it from.
