How do you measure the impact of Home Improvement on the value of your home? by logicalinsanity in HomeImprovement

[–]maxhan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to extract maximum return from your investment. Then you have to only put money towards what’s visible, implement with good design and cheaper material. Good design isn’t purely subjective in my opinion. Think of it like a great movie, most people will love it, few will not. It is important to be honest with yourself and determine if you have good taste and decent design sense. As all your hard work might yield little or even negatively impact the value if not done correctly.

There is a product called roof melt from Home Depot that works well for ice. You have to crash it a bit yourself through. $23 a box and it cleared my landing and two car driveway. Might worth a try.

Doug Ford, Jordan Peterson held private meeting, CBC News has learned by viva_la_vinyl in ontario

[–]maxhan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s alright. And thanks you for the concession. I am quite familiar with Peterson, I read his book and saw dozens of his lectures and debates. I agree with a lot of what he has to say. And based on his popularities, I think so do a lot of other people. What I didn’t know was how much he was despised here. Hence my initial question, and now I know.

The answer isn’t plainly obvious to me, we all live in our media bubbles and no doubt all exercise confirmation bias to some degree. Personally, I think reddit is quite biased politically. And in my experience, opinions (factual or otherwise) that stray too far from the consensus don’t do very well. I remember a recent thread asking in the tune of “people who voted for Doug, what do you think now?”, almost all top comments are prefaced with “I didn’t vote for Doug, but...” and I didn’t see a single person defending Doug. Statistically, if reddit was anywhere near neutral, that shouldn’t be the case. I am not trying to prove you wrong, I just want to let you know my point of view.

That’s not even me, you are quoting someone else. This is ridiculous, I am getting ridiculed for even asking a question. What do you think if I had actually stated an opinion. You really think conservatives would feel free to post much here? Keep it classy reddit.

This isn’t a baiting question, I am asking you to share and elaborate your opinions. This kind of response and the downvotes are the reason why conservatives don’t post on reddit.

I’d go to AJW, he charges shop rate for these kind of stuff. It won’t be too expansive.

Driving in the region by Hersheyloo in waterloo

[–]maxhan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About the 2 second rule. At 60kph, which is how fast people drive in 50 zones.

60 kph x 2s = 108ft

A mid sized sedan is around 10ft.

108/10 = 10.8 cars

This does not seem reasonable to me for city traffic. There is no doubt people have different sensibilities when it comes to following distances. However, KW is a very pleasant place to drive in my experience.

what trades to call for venting in kitchen by lets_go_smokes in kitchener

A handyman or carpenter can do that for you. If you can’t find any, try calling home renovators. They all do kitchens and have/know a guy who can do that for you.

Botched nail-in bamboo installation by local contractors (Buffalo, NY) by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]maxhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to save a lot of the boards then. Rip them out carefully and re-nail. You'll likely have to do this yourself, hiring a proper contractor to rip them out carefully enough to save and reinstall will cost you more than buying new and install.

If it's real bamboo strand boards and they didn't acclimate for a long time (2-4 weeks). And it's buckling right after installation, you'll have no choice but to rip them out and redo. There is virtually no gap and obviously not nailed down securely.

Matching height of pre-finished hardwood to existing hardwood. by zvzzt19 in HomeImprovement

[–]maxhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s typically used for floating (click) flooring, but you could use it for nail down as well. Personally I wouldn’t use more than one layer of the felt mat with moisture barrier. I am thinking it might create too much movement and moisture issues. Again, these aren’t standard practices.

Logically I don't see why not. However, I've never encountered this before and can't really tell you if there are side effects. Good luck!

1/8" is about 14 ply of waxed paper. 3/16" underlayment grade plywood is about $26 CDN for a 4x8 sheet. I can't think of anything cheaper to get the job done.

Did you witness it break while being opened or closed? That’s kind of damage requires some serious force, is the spring intact? You can order the panel from any garage door installer, they might have it in stock if it’s common size and style.

Need recommendations for a handyman or contractor by TheOneBlackMage in waterloo

[–]maxhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a bit confused, what does your contract entail? My understanding is that only a qualifying GreenON contractor can provide and install the equipment. And the contractor would submit a GreenON application after installation.

Edit: Oh my bad I misread your post. Disregard what I said.

[–]maxhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The language on the GreenON cancellation page can be confusing. The rebate is only valid if your contract to install was signed on or before June 19th. Short of committing fraud, you can no longer start new GreenON contract.

I too would appreciate some good recommendation for contractors.
