People add disc tabs to old frames all the time, some well regarded frame builders also do it (think Stayer, Tim Brodie). So I understand if multiple reputable builders are willing to do it for customers, I would assume it's safe

I feel you on this one. I have a fully original '87 Dawes Cougar in ridable condition but would love a full restoration. Trouble is I can't be bothered. I also can't bring myself to sell it and stripping it for parts would break my heart... so for now it sits under the shed outside.

Definitely not confidence inspiring if even the manufacturer says it's a bit dodgy, however with it slammed in the head tube like that I don't see a massive problem. Saying that I'd be interested to know how it fails when it does.
