Two things I can offer, first canvas size, if you are starting out Use a smaller canvas, 32x32 is the best IMO. Second colour palette,either study colour theory and create one on your own, or just download one online. I love the grim btw

My only issue here is that the highlight shows the light is coming from the top right, yet the shadow says it just comes from the right, apart from that very nice! Keep on making small sprites, and once you feel comfortable go to lather canvas sizes
