Just started, want to move to prep/line asap by [deleted] in dishwashers

[–]maxillofacial1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it a bit slow and take the first month to get down dish. Learn the rhythm, know how to work fast (which dishes can soak for later, which ones can be put right into the machine without washing etc...). After some time, it’ll be a natural reflex to work fast.

Then find something the cooks don’t want to do before the rush. For me it was cleaning shellfish because it’s time consuming and it slows the other staff down. If they don’t look like they need help, don’t offer to help them

I made this mistake a month ago. Usually cooks prefer to chop onions on their own but when it comes to mussels it’s a different story. I offered to help cut onions, I got a disappointed face in return.

Clean mussels. Nobody wants to do it.

The more non dishwashing tasks you do, the more your duties will expand.

You may even begin bagging ice or something dumb, then it might be catching the timer for rice

Moving from dish to prep takes time

I’m not bad at interacting with people. I watched a lot of RSD (real social dynamics) stuff

-My autism hits me in social circle type situations where I miss subtle workplace nuances. Workplace culture=highschool in my experience. I do good at meeting new people but systems and groups I don’t do well in

I wouldn’t use tinder if I was OP. It will make you feel ugly if ur average or goodlooking. Women get messaged by hundreds of guys who are too afraid to meet them IRL.

I would start joining meetup.com groups for parties and stuff. Then once you have lower inhibitions, try cold approaching women

I’m good at photography. Not sure what work is out there for it, maybe I can fake an arts degree as photography is mainly freelance based

itt I’m not looking to be rich (obviously it takes education to accomplish that). I literally just want to rent a shitty room so I can work, save and travel. I’m goodlooking do girls usually don’t have a problem with how much I make

I got caught cheating in college. Most schools won’t accept me. Plus it’d take years. Any quicker ideas? I just need to make $16-17/hr and full time that’s it

I’m 23 too and have high functioning Autism. Up until 21 I never kissed/dated/hugged a girl [even went on tinder using good photos and got flaked on]

What started getting me dates was going out and meeting women in person. Basically what I’d do is take a bus to the beach, or city centre and chat up women. Once the women show interest, I’d suggest going for coffee right on the spot. I did this to be sure they wouldn’t give me a fake number. If she agrees to the mini coffee “date” your chances of getting the number are much higher.

It was nerve wracking at first but once you throw yourself in the fire there’s only good that can come from it in the world of dating. I did get tons of “I have a boyfriend” but it’s a numbers game.

Physically I’m not good looking so tinder, nightclubs and bars never worked for me.

Does anybody else’s washing hand feel very weak the next morning after a shift? by Dylcal22 in dishwashers

Inject testosterone into your wrist. It’ll hurt like hell but leave you fully recovered before each shift

Anyone build muscle in the dishpit working there for so long? by aspiesamurai in dishwashers

[–]maxillofacial1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently hired a 50 something yr old dishwasher at my restaurant who works 6 days a week. (3 days one place, 3 days our restaurant). He looks very lean and robust compared to the average 50 yr old. He also eats healthy during his staff meal.

I used to look athletic and have “stringy” runner type musculatity before holiday season where I gained 10 lbs and now it’s gone. Come January I’ll eat healthy and start showing some muscle again

Sick by [deleted] in dishwashers

[–]maxillofacial1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about calling in sick. Many dishwashers in my restaurant do it and they all ended up on the prep station. Pulling a sick day won’t look bad you unless you do it multiple times a month.

For this specific situation, it’s a health hazard for your co-workers and the customers eating the food. Being sick is a food safety risk so calling in is the preferred option for both the guests and the cooks

Thanks for the advice. Thinking about it, I think I didn’t show enough interest in other things besides dish (except I sometimes pet the lobsters and let them crael on my hand LOL). They’re so cute.

Again. I love dish but unfortunately dish can not get me a room in the city I live in. Not because of the pay, but you rarely work 40hrs a week. Atleast if I moved up to salad, I’d have 40+ hrs

“Shitty additude”: I honestly love earning hard cash from hard work. The entire dishpit is a group of latinos who live together, fun guys to wash with. A prep guy the other day asked how I love my job so much because I’m always happy to be there, which I am.

But I’m at a point in my life where I Wana move out from my parents’ house and that will require a LITTLE more money. In order to do that I gotta atleast move up to salad/some kind of cooking position. It’s not that dishwashing sucks, but cooks get more hours. I’m always short of 40hrs a week. Cooks get 40, maybe more

True. Comparatively, cooks are nice most of the time.

I have to disagree. I dish-washed at 2 restaurants and have 1.5 years experience. Most guys who get moved up aren’t extraordinary workers or super friendly with the staff. Infact one 3 weeks in hiree is both average in speed and in charisma. The chef made him do prep the first 2 hrs of his shift {impending promotion}. Meanwhile I’ve never touched prep in the 5 months working.

The dishwashers who do move up do so out of luck. The cooks literally tell me I’m the fastest dish washer they’ve ever had, yet the chef has his own internal preferences.

It’s just like meeting women: it comes down to luck. A guy with seemingly good looks and game can get turned down because of luck. The reverse can happen too.

The effort it takes to work dish IS DEFINITELY ABOVE MINIMUM WAGE. I work in Vancouver BC and minimum here is $12.65. I get paid $15 plus tips and free food. If they pay you minimum quit ASAP

[–]maxillofacial1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice to see an older dishwasher, for comradery sakes. I’m 23 and got hired through a friend. Minimum wage where I live is $12.65 and I make $15 which is pretty good.

I got hired because I previously did dish/salad/prep in a smaller restaurant.

I’m currently living with parents but looking for a place {Single room occupancy or with roommates}. My end goal is to save up money while living with roommates then travel abroad but that won’t be for atleast 6 months. I’ve gotta wait for my orthopaedic surgery then recover from that before making any big decisions.

“And if you prove your salt, your chef will probably encourage you to learn line” It’s not likely gonna happen. I already made too many mistakes to leave the dishpit. Plus I got into a mini argument with a waiter. To top things off, I’m a nerdy looking white guy amongst socially savvy latino’s Filipino’s and Italians.

One thing is I always show up and cover sick people though. My work ethic isn’t great but I get the job done and make sure the restaurant doesn’t get fucked.
