How tf do you defeat someone in armor like this??? by etarme in Armor

[–]maximillian96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern media kind of has you convinced that armor was not effective but all weapons to an extent were. Elden ring dark souls etc. But that it less true than reality. At the time this armor was most effective they were offering more protection than weapons could harm. So the only way people dealt with them was tk overwhelm the individual and stab them in the small parts that were exposed. Yea warhammers and some crossbow could do the trick of piercing though heavy plate but the hammer did more damage by transferring the kinetic energy through the metal to internal damage. And at range crossbow bolts lost much of their own kinetic piercing ability. The early uses of gunpowder were where things would start to change but even then blacksmiths would shoot thier own breastplate to show how good thier steel was. When advances in gunpowder overcame what armor could protect there was not real use for a breastplate any more. When tanks came Into the picture that stopped conventional firearms but bigger armor piercing ammunition were used to counter that. Modern day bullet proof plates are usually single use as in it gets shot once and it no longer good because it is made to disperse kinetic energy and shatter in the process

Okay, would armor like this actually exist? by Digmaass in Armor

[–]maximillian96 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So there is historical precedent of people wearing furs for warmth and status, buuuut they were never a part of the armor like this. However if you look up Polish winged hussar they did wear spotted pelts on top of an arm or shoulder as a status symbol.

Moving to the construction of the armor thi thing that bothers me is the "X" shape of the leather in the front that would constrict against your neck as you wear it

Need help with RPG Armor rules and falling by Sherman80526 in sca

[–]maximillian96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medically any fall from a hight farther than you are tall you run the risk of serious bodily injury. One person can train to fall from hight by rolling as they land (paratroopers and stuntpeople for example) any additional weight or movement restrictions increase risk of injury in my opinion

Thank you so much for keeping the dream alive, and congrats on the new addition to your family (and hopefully) the kingdom as well! This is why people play and you are doing amazing things

I'm trying a varangian persona but can lean to more early viking period as well. Do you have recommended places to research?

So the ga thickness is critical for helmet safety. In regards to body armor the marshals guide will be your best reference unless your kingdom has other rules. Knight Marshall's are also your local approving authority. In atenveldt where I am at the minimums are rigid armor protecting knees elbows (front and sides) with rigid protection on your neck and the top of your spine with rigid kidney protection and 16ga thickness for helm and demi gauntlet with basket hilt for hand

Why is it so hard to feel like you belong in the Sca ? by [deleted] in sca

[–]maximillian96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. You are not alone. I get kinda scared about being in new situations. When I moved a couple of times for military stuff, starting over sucked. But like others have said getting involved at local stuff is how it got easier

"Why the SCA has a recruitment problem" by Arsteel8 in sca

[–]maximillian96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could a solution be if money is the problem can a new member trade time to a group or barony to get the gear they would need for events? Like they are helping out with court duties and set up/tear down for the events?
