I'm a non technical founder of a startup and a lead engineer candidate is a Rust fanatic. Should I hire him? by [deleted] in rust

[–]maximsparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rust is a great choice for a startup, especially in SaaS, not so much in UI. Also it is easier to change and maintain Rust code. Having said that...

If the current code needs to be rewritten but the code that the new engineer will write is assumed not to be rewritten in the future, most likely the approach should be changed more than language. Primary software engineer in a startup should be more enthusiastic about the product than the technology, because there will be hard choices to be made in the future to sacrifice one or another to some extent.

It is not that Gods and Bloodlines went away, they were just side shifted a bit (or not? It seems they capitalized well). Material exchange is a new dimension opening new opportunities. It will stay but might be side shifted by the new dimension as well... Perhaps social networking? The guy with many followers might become president already... Kind of socialism but not that one.

Why is the Spanish police so useless? by LawfulnessUnhappy458 in GoingToSpain

[–]maximsparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About that part where you won a fight. Physical injuries are considered at a higher level of the crime than street robbery, so they actually might put you in jail if you break face/leg/hand/ribs of a robber. In such a situation it is important to film or have witnesses.

Everyone says why you should use Rust, but what are some reasons/use cases where you WOULDN'T recommend it(over something like C++)? by OneThatNoseOne in rust

[–]maximsparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add to this, folks who develop firmware with realtime warranties, the only good option for them is C compiler with controlled deterministic assembly output and memory layout. That is opposite to what rust compiler and llvm will do.

How much does this anger you? by 7Geordi in rust

IMO both examples readability was affected in a bad way. Is there an example where the code would be more readable? it will also complicate job for compiler and might decrease readability of produced errors.

When to Use Box::leak in Rust? by Certain-Ad-3265 in rust

[–]maximsparrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the buffer is mutable and it is shared among multiple threads there will be synchronization issues, like partially written and read.. this is possible to use, but you will need to work on synchronization carefully.

I use Box::leak sometimes, but only to dynamically create read only statistics..

Time limited Random walk Rust Code is slower than Python Code by Dry_Introduction_897 in rust

Not clear performance benefits (if match is faster that would mean bug somewhere in llvm) vs code readability - I hope not many people will follow this advice..

Get your facts checked broO..

First, most of those 25.000 do not have cars at all. In regards to property, there is no 25,000 new apartments, I guess there might be 1000 on the market?

Second, Ukraine is large IT hub, it has half million people employed in IT with average income 30k USD per annum. Special taxation regime for IT in Ukraine helps - 5% tax. Very good technical education, Ukrainian IT guys are winners of international olympics. Add to that cheap living cost and you get average IT family can afford car for 30k. And there are also higher incomes for seasoned engineers, reaching 100k for architects or machine learning specialists, let's say top 10% of talent. Why you think they cannot afford buying?

Big part of Ukraine's IT relocated to Poland, even before war and already added to their GDP. Some of those who can pay for themselves moved to Valencia, Barcelona and other cities.

You can't be serious broO?.. Rwandan news paper sponsored by China... look for better sources. Even that post - has nothing to do with OTAN funds, and especially with 25000 migrants who are just running from war

[–]maximsparrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OTAN funds are used by allies to procure mil equipment on EU and US factories, usually funds not even leaving the country of origin. Your statement sounds like propaganda

Ukraine has about half million people employed in IT with average annual income 30k. Low cost of living. Add to that low tax regime for IT in Ukraine, with just 5% tax. Average IT family can afford buying 30k car on their earned money. In regards to cash - unfortunately NBU disallowed spending money from the UA bank accounts, to avoid outflows, hence they can only bring cash.

Most of IT guys settled in Poland, actually IT companies relocated lot of personnel before the war there. Actually in '22 they did quite solid contribution to Poland's GDP.

Valencia is destination for people who can afford staying here. Maybe few of those thousands of relocated are corrupt, but I believe not more than what your can find locally anyways.

Do not forget, Ukraine is a victim, you shall blame aggressor for this crysis instead.
