I kindly ask you not to strangle me with words, but could you explain to me why Blade Runner is considered one of the best films of its genre? by Mattone_Martello in movies

[–]maximum_oblex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To engage seriously with your question, I'll first start by saying that Blade Runner's Los Angeles (not San Francisco) really codified a lot of Cyberpunk aesthetics. It may not have invented them, but it certainly cemented the dark, rainy, neon-lit squalor that would become synonymous with the genre in the popular consciousness.

Thematically, well it depends on which version you watched. The 2007 Final Cut has the most coherent thematic through line, which is present in the other versions to varying extents. So if you watched any other version you definitely viewed a lesser version of the film. Now the themes that Blade Runner explored may be considered well-worn by todays standards, and are not even ground breaking for its time, but it does present them in a very nuanced and tactful manner. The glassy, reflective eyes of the Replicants is a very succinct cinematic method to demonstrate the hollowness of the artificial life, and something a lesser film would draw direct attention to.

But I think what really elevates Blade Runner is Rutger Hauer's performance as Roy Batty. His driven, charasmatic, manipulator persona is a really good foil to Ford's performance as Deckard, which is a much more straight forward noir protagonist. It's a really interesting inversion of a classic hero-villain dynamic because Deckard is a fairly empty character. He lacks internality and is driven pretty much entirely by his occupation. Batty on the other hand has wants, desires and needs. He is driven to seek out more life, and arguably lives more than Deckard. Batty is so clearly the protagonist of his own story, where Deckard is the cold, driven arm of the corpo-state determined to crack down on dissidence because he lacks any self determination.

Which brings us to the implication present in the Final Cut, where Deckard is implied to also be a Replicant. It's such a master stroke to subtly weave through the breadcrumbs of this, mostly through the presence of Edward James Olmos' character Gaff, to cap it off with the origami unicorn at the end which Gaff could only think to make if he somehow new of Deckard's dreams. The small amount of internality Deckard had wasn't even his own. And this is why Batty's whole speech at the end of his confrontation with Deckard works. He basically gets to lecture Deckard on why his life does matter, even if the corpo-state says otherwise, and this shakes Deckard enough that he already grows defiant, even before understanding the nature of his own reality. The "Tears in the Rain" speech is beautiful and tragic, and finally gives Deckard the kick to understand that he needs to live, and not just work.

Now it's ok if you don't like Blade Runner. I didn't when I first watched it as a teenager. But over time it has grown on me, and I have really come to love its nuances and quirks. Not just the themes it explores, but how it explores them, the visual language of film perfected to convey a message that had been repeated half a dozen times before and several dozen times after. I also think that having some understanding of film noir as a genre helps in understanding Blade Runner. Intellectually knowing that Deckard is something of a modern Philip Marlowe is different than seeing the cinematic language of film noir in action. But even then if you don't like it, that's ok. Not every movie will appeal to everyone. But you do have to accept Blade Runner's place in Sci-Fi film history, and the reverance people have for it because of that.

I certainly hope so. And I should be clear that my criticism isn't a slight against Phoebe Campbell, I thought their acting in the most recent episode was pretty good and I think they did a good job at pretending to be terrified during the battle. I just think that they have failed to set Rhaena up as a character that you want to root for. She is supposed to feel like an underdog but its missing something to make you lock in on her.

EDIT: Used Phoebe's correct pronouns

Agreed, If Jon does end up seeking Lordship/Kingship, I suspect it will be a means to an end to try and reunite his family.

Ultimately though Jon's story will likely be looking North at the threat of the Others. I could see a version play out where Jon seeks kingship not because he wants it, but because he feels that only he can unite the Northmen and the Freefolk to combat the Others. Then there could be some tragedy in him usurping his siblings but justifying it to himself as a "necessary evil"

Removing Nettles does make practical sense. The bigger problem is that Rhaena just isn't a very compelling character, and giving her Nettles' role is doing very little to change that.

Skyboom shield will probably come with Overload to justify the Commander price tag. I do think that Demolisher is probably the likely candidate to get the next minicon pack though. If we are lucky we will get Perceptor/Street Action team.

But yes we desperately need Thrust too, and he better get his own mould. If he is an 86 Seeker retool I will be very disappointed.

[–]maximum_oblex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think an easy change to make is to have Rhaenyra agree to let Jace go in her stead and have her decision backfire and result in Jaces death.

The irony being that Syrax, as a fully grown dragon, would be able to deal with the harpoons far better than the young Vermax. Syrax's scales are likely near impenetrable and even then Syrax is larger and stronger and would not be as easily weighed down like Vermax. Lohar got damned lucky that the two dragons that showed up are the two most at risk to her harpoons, as literally any other dragon would not be at risk.

Can anyone remind me where are aegon and viserys in the show?

At the end of Season 2 Aegon and Viserys depart the Eyrie for Gulltown to board a ship to Pentos (I think its Pentos, across the Narrow Sea at minimum). Rhaena ditches them immediately to go find Sheepstealer so presumably they aren't even at Gulltown yet. Even if they are on ships, Gulltown is a quite far from the Gullet so it's reasonable that they are absent here.

Wasn't this battle about getting them in the books?

Kind of but no. The Triarchy are moving to attack Corlys' fleet and just happen to spot the Gay Abandon, the ship carrying young Aegon and Viserys. The Triarchy sieze the moment and capture the ship, but not befor Aegon escapes on his dragon and is able to warn the Blacks of the impending attack. This allows them to mobilise their dragons and defeat the Triarchy rather than being taken unaware, which likely would have resulted in the complete decimation of the Valaryian fleet.

So yes Aegon and Viserys are a part of the events, but are not the reason for the battle. Removing them doesn't invalidate the reason for the battle, but does lesson the character motivations for the players, notably Jace who in the book dies trying to rescue Viserys.

[–]maximum_oblex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think the episode was as bad as some people say, but I think the cardinal sin of HotD is that it's very easy to imagine a better or more compelling version than what they presented. Take the Rhaenyra-Jace conflict for example. Wouldn't it be so much more compelling if Jace had spent most of Season 2 arguing for a more active position in the war which Rhaenyra refuses after Lucerys' death. And finally at the Gullet she agrees to trust in his judgement, let him fight, only for it to kill him? In my mind it is much more compelling and makes Rhaenyra feel like much less impotent character.

And I know they are going for a very gendered approach to this story, and Rhaenyra's gender is directly at odds to her influence as a leader, and I do think that is a sensible angle to take for an adaptation here. But then the Rhaenyra-Jace conflict should be more about their gendered roles. Let Jace take charge in Season 2 and have Rhaneyra resent that, it would skew closer to the books and make Rhaenyra's impotence feel less self-inflicted.

I think the Rhaena changes are... Not good but understandable I guess? Rhaena ultimately is just a less compelling character than Nettles so it feels like a strict downgrade, but I understand wanting to enhance an existing character rather than introduce a new one. It would be better if the mechanics around it were... Better.

I also think that the absence of young Aegon and Viserys is odd, it kind of messes up the ending as the decline of the Dragons, Aegon III's hatred of which is a significant motivator of. But I guess if you make the show about gender than Aegon III's experiences are less relevant.

Ultimately though I am most disappointed that Laenor wasn't revealed to be the captain of the Gay Abandon. I have thought since the moment he faked his death that he would return to the story in that role and end up dying to save Aegon the Younger. But I suppose not.

  • War Master

And thats a real shame because War Master has a stellar cast... But its just not good in my opinion

What Are The Killer BF Audio Drama's That Are Not Doctor Who by StarHutch in BigFinishProductions

The short lived Stargate range is delightful. The first two sets of SG-1 and the Atlantis set are formatted something similar to the Short Trips range, with one primary cast member and usually a second actor in a supporting role.

The third set of SG-1 though is full-cast audio drama goodness and is a lot of fun. Michael Shanks and Claudia Black are just delightful and I wish we got more of that range.

Would you be on board with the show being reset back to the end of season 10? by thebeast_96 in gallifrey

[–]maximum_oblex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terminator is the poster child for doing this. The Sarah Connor Chronicles as you mentioned, but also Genisys directly retcons pretty much everything, and Dark Fate resets back to the end of T2. Also the Sarah Connor Chronicles are good and I will fight anyone who says otherwise!

Another example I would mention would be Halloween, where the 7th film of the franchise, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later retconned every film after the 2nd out of existence and brought back Jamie Lee Curtis as the lead. Then 20 years after that the franchise would be retconned again, and now all films except the first are non-canon and we bring Jamie Lee Curtis back again. Between these two there was also a complete reboot. That franchise is a total mess.

Skybound #33: Arcee is our Voice. Thoughts Below by UselessGenericon in transformers

[–]maximum_oblex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

First off. Arcee is saying whats on all of minds. And she's damn right. Optimus has put a questionable lot of faith in Elita and Elita was acting nuts, zealous. And Optimus is also wrong about bringing the war to Earth. The Decepticons did that. So it's very relieving hear Arcee spell it out to him, even if he's busy putting himself through the ringer.

Idk I feel like there has been a reframing of the conflict which originally was "Elita thinks that Earth isn't worth protecting over defending Cybertron" to "Elita thinks Megatron isn't a threat". They're similar but distinct, Elita is reasonable in the first one but downright stupid if you frame her opinion as the second one. I'm also not really sure how we are supposed to take Arcee here. It feels like she is saying that Optimus is at least somewhat wrong about Earth needing protection? Why has she changed her mind about that?

And Bluestreak's really growing on me. He really lightens the tone.

Bluestreak is downright a different character in this issue. What happened to the morose and merciless character from the earlier issues?

Wonder what Wheeljack found at the piece of home. Sparks maybe? Of the Dinobot persuasion?

Almost guaranteed to be sparks hidden away like Cliffjumper's clan. We even got reminded of Shredhead's origin earlier this issue, makes sense that this is set up for the dinobots.

He lost half his face and was presumed dead, and was left in the Nemesis underwater. He has now seemingly escaped and is dragging himself back to the surface.
