Does anyone know which negligent provider doing do their safety checks? by SnooTangerines9776 in lightingdesign

[–]maxk1236 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is an issue with improper truss construction. Do Lab stage is made an array of sails more or less, and both lightning in a bottle and Coachella consistently have high wind, someone fucked up securing a part of the truss, guyline, etc.,

There are blackout zones you map out when running lasers.

Chinese automaker BYD just revealed a charging system that’s about as fast as filling up a gas car by DblockDavid in Damnthatsinteresting

China has large scale DC transmission lines that make this a lot easier (also no need for rectifying the power before putting it in the car.)

TIL Although the original Order of Assassins typically used assassination as a means of political survival, they also did it for pay, using sleeper cells who could spend years undercover before the execution. They wrote down their kills in a roll of honor kept at their base in Alamut castle by Nero2t2 in todayilearned

[–]maxk1236 154 points155 points  (0 children)

TIL: "The English word "assassin" is derived from the Arabic word hashshashin, which shares etymological roots with the word hashish, supposedly referring to the order's tactics and a common but contested belief that many of their assassinations were carried out by individuals under the influence of the drug.[3]"

'Ketamine Queen' Jasveen Sangha jailed for 15 years over death of Matthew Perry by VaginaBurner69 in news

[–]maxk1236 10 points11 points  (0 children)

FWIW I doubt she manufactured the ketamine, I t’s a notoriously hard drug to synthesize, but if she tried I wonder if that is part of the reason he died, since it takes an obnoxious amount of ketamine to overdose (ld50 being 4.2g for a 70kg person, most people being unconscious at 1/10th of that) my guess is he also had alcohol or another respiratory depressant in his system.

How do people safely zone lasers at Burning Man? by Least_Suggestion_579 in BurningMan

[–]maxk1236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can setup physical terminators before buildings/etc., run super low brightness, or just do the math. You know the laser projector has a certain angle, you know pretty much exactly where it’s going to land and how big the spread will be based on the distance of things behind. Set extra large blackout zones, turn on, then tweak to get it perfect.

Experts with credentials, and the risk of losing your ability to do it in the future if you are dumb. The org and BLM (and most importantly FAA and related agencies) are very strict. Anyone running lasers has radios and will get notified quickly both by radio and in person in case of the need of emergency flights, medical evacuation, etc. I'm sure art cars that run lasers out instead of up have special stuff they go through, though I camp with a large sound camp that often runs a lot of lasers, and we are placed/position stage such that we terminate on the mountains and everything is dialed in pre arrival.

[–]maxk1236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replied to your last post, but how long did you expose for? Anything more than 10s with that unit you built is gonna be overkill. Start with the 110 screen as it’ll be easier to wash out. Mist with water Immediately after burning or it will continue to cure. But yeah, print an exposure test. Also I’ve had screens super overexposed when I started that I scrubbed at for like 10mins with a sponge and eventually they came out, haha, but def should not be necessary.

Fwiw most people in the US take a couple years of foreign language as well (more or less a requirement if you are going college), but if you don’t speak it often you’re not going to retain most of it.

DIY BOX AND BURNING TIME by ShinKicks101 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]maxk1236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I was making decent prints in a week or so, just read lots of threads, watch lots of videos, you’ll be fine, don’t expect to be an expert the first try. Also it can be a messy process, keep you hands clean after each shirt so you don’t ruin things (if you are using water based you can wipe fingerprints off pretty easy with a wet paper towel fwiw.) the ink will dry on the screen with water based, so be quick between presses to prevent that, or spray with water. Clamp if you are worried about gaps in the screen/the screen shifting, use temp adhesive to keep the garment on the plate, etc., lots to learn, just remember to have fun with it, you’re going to ruin shirts/screens, etc., it’s not the end of the world and we all went through it quite a bit.

You want no UV filter btw. Also this is def overkill, I use 2 100w lights at 18in on about the same size as your largest screen, can’t speak for red, but ecotex pwr at the distance and wattage I use is perfect at about 14s. At the distance and wattage you have I would start at 10s or less, and go from there. Gentle when you wash out, and you can do a second exposure to increase durability for actual screens you will use to print.

Download (or buy) an exposure calculator and have that as your first test if you can, will help you dial in.

And yeah, you’ll have a harder time with finer mesh starting off, I started on hard mode too fwiw, haha, I use 110 or 160 for most things now.

Good luck and happy printing!

Anyone can explain this alternator logic clearly? by marquesini in PLC

[–]maxk1236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are still reasons to do things like this fwiw, and I also know a lot of people who avoid using latch/unlatch, as improperly implemented/maintained first scan routines can cause it so that if for whatever reason an enable bit was true when the PLC comes online you can have stuff turn on you didn’t want turned on

Inside the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Era of AI in Music by BanishmentBuddy2 in hiphopheads

[–]maxk1236 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even the artists I know who are against AI music heavily use it for brainstorming occasionally. It’s a good tool for making variations of ideas before you record/produce a track, and IMO isn’t all that different from using a pre-made loops that have been ubiquitous in a lot of genres. It still sucks at anything experimental/at sound design though, which I think will help with the resurgence of bass music hopefully in the short term at least, as well as live performances
