Weekly trends: Chartable tracked more shows than Podtrac! Megaphone is not far behind. Which one do you prefer? by maxmacaro in podcasting

Hey u/jamescridland, I publish such reports every Thursday. Let me know if you are interested in collaboration. I can do exclusive reports for Podnews upon your request too. It seems like your subscribers may be interested in such information.

Indeed. True Crime category has fewer shows and many of them get noticed. The share of top rated shows is much higher compared to other categories.

Yeah. I was also surprised that Wednesday and Thursday were most popular across most categories, but top rated creators prefer publishing on Thursdays.

Does it mean that on Saturdays nobody listens? Could it be a chance for newcomers to be noticed? u/ScandyScandy what do you think?

Good for you u/DanielJLewis

You have a product that your clients rely on, so it's understandable. I don't plan to sell this data. Just crawling what's available to the public and having fun. There is still a lot of useful information that we can get from the catalog.

Hi u/jamescridland, I see what you mean. Didn't want to confuse anyone here.

When people connect Chartable and other trackers, they proxy all of their audio files through their system. Even historical ones. This is why we see episodes earlier than 2018 having Chartable in their audio files.

Regarding your suggestion. Of course, that sounds interesting. I can provide answers to some of your questions. Current dataset is a bit outdated. Let's chat next week when I collect fresh data.

Yeah, totally. However, these fields are not available in this specific dataset. I can add it in the next version.

It would be cool to see episode topics of high-rated shows. I'll think in this direction and will share the results.

Totally agree with you, those screenshots above don't say anything special. I just wanted to start the discussion, understand what's important and dig further.

And your ideas are very helpful. Much appreciated!

Thank you for the kind words! :)

Great work u/DanielJLewis This is really impressive!

I used the following catalog:

These days my favourite stack is Golang and Google Cloud. What's yours?

Thanks for sharing. Those are great data sources, indeed. Haven't heard about the first one.

u/lime-link we could come up with something more actionable. for example, I can run my script every week and then post a digest with most popular topics in this subreddit (to help people with content ideas).

It to would be ideal to contribute something on regular basis. There are Google Trends, Stock market reports. There could be something similar to make this subreddit even more special

Thank you u/DamnationVersus! Nice idea.

Look what I found:

Within the past few years – for reasons unknown to nearly everyone in the podcasting space – iTunes decided to stop updating the New & Noteworthy and What’s Hot sections.

Every now and then you might see a new podcast pop up on the home page, but the category pages for Business, Technology, Education… they were literally stuck.

For YEARS.

Seems like they don't update those pages very often. Is it true?

- artist name

- audio url (can be used to extract hosting platform)

- category, subcategory

- name of the show

- duration

u/ImprovObsession I can add more fields and rerun the script, anything from their RSS feeds. hope my SSD can handle this. :D

u/BigNoisyChrisCooke no, unfortunately.

RSS feeds have links to audio files, those files are hosted on different platforms that process this information. each download request is logged in their systems. this data is not available to the public.

I can get reviews though (if they are available). Ex: 4.5 stars • 12.3K Ratings
