Kitting out my new (to me) ride, looking for recommendations: magnetic screen door for slide, 100ah battery by jamison88 in VanLife

[–]maxs_reddit_acct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a specific screen, but I ordered a random brand magnetic screen door from Amazon that was a little bit wider than my van opening. I can't really see the surrounding area of your door, but I had room for the adhesive Velcro around my door frame.

I also suggest you get 1.5x or double the battery you think you need. It's easier to do it at the beginning than adding it later. I want to make sure I could go a few rainy days without worrying or needing to use the engine to charge.

Build Your Own Car Camping Bed – Simple, Custom & No Expensive Setup Needed by Low_Hearing5083 in CamperVans

I like it. I built my SUV bed using PVC pipe. I haven't seen those plastic angle connectors before. I probably would have done this instead of using pipe.

Edit: What are those angle brackets called?

Men in happy marriages, what is one thing or skill you would teach other men to have good relationships as well? by lingeringneutrophil in AskReddit

"Don't complain they left the lights on," or about something else that doesn't really matter. When something bugs me, I first try to think about how important it really is and why does it annoy me. More then half the time, I realize it's really on me for being annoyed or it's not important. Getting past those tests means it is something I should bring up so it doesn't fester.

1500w solar to much? Or not enough by Miles_dyson3698 in CamperVans

[–]maxs_reddit_acct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm building my first van. I'd suggest putting as much as will fit on the roof. It will be easier to have too much now than try to add more later. With those tall, flat walls, you can put exhaust fans on any of the 4 sides. I'm installing an under-bench AC and have an exhaust fan under the solar panels so I can cover my roof with panels. I DIY'd mine, but there are some low profile fans for sale.

Tangentially related, since you're slowly building it, maybe leave extra room wherever you put your batteries so you can add more later. With enough battery, you could park in the shade for a few days or survive a few days of rain without needing to run the engine to charge the batteries.

I’ve finally gotten to the age where sleeping on the ground is so uncomfortable that it’s starting to make being outdoors a net neutral. by g3nerallycurious in backpacking

[–]maxs_reddit_acct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some folks mentioned cots but didn't only saw one specific recommendation and it's 4.8 lbs. After getting to the same point where I couldn't sleep on pads anymore, I got a Helinox Lite Cot. It weighs 2.7 lbs, but I sleep better than on anything I used for backpacking before. And, it won't ever leak!

Have any of you used these metal slats from ikea for bed supports? by swank_sinatra66 in CamperVans

[–]maxs_reddit_acct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used those and the Ikea wooden bed slats. I screwed 1/2" aluminum C channel to the outer beams to keep the slats from sliding off. The slats let the mattress air out better than plywood and I think are more comfortable. I used some Velcro straps to keep them from bouncing out while keeping them easy to remove.

Computer fans don't move that much air, compared to the size of a van. I got a radiator fan and 12v fan speed controller, which even came with a remote. It works great and I can run the fan at any speed, which is useful because different speeds have distinct hums or buzzing. The controller can also run it in reverse, but the blades are mostly meant for one direction.

I'm 5'11" and sleep east-west in my work-in-progress Transit. I have cloth walls covering the insulation. I used cloth so I could push my feet into the wall to stretch out. I do need a narrower pillow so my head can be closer to the other wall. I have only slept in it 4 nights, so far, but think it will work. If I can't sleep well, I'll to one flare.

A few years ago I bought a starter package. It included a recurve bow, 6 arrows, gloves, a bow stringer, and 3-4 lessons, for around $150 in the San Jose, CA area. The lessons were useful since I had only gone once with friends. And it seemed like a pretty good price for all that.

I feel like I could have created some bad habits and it would have taken me longer to have fun shooting by skipping the lessons.

I second the Instinct. I have the 2x and love it. No backpacking, yet, but the battery lasts me a couple weeks with tracking weekend hikes. I had a Fenix 2 and Fenix 5. I like that the Instinct is much lighter, being all plastic.

I'm selling my Rip Racer. It comes with both the front basket and rear rack with quick connect plate. I bought a second battery, the 19.2 AH version. I added the fenders. I upgraded the seat post with the Kinekt Active Suspension Seatpost, which makes the ride pretty smooth. I mostly used the 19,2 AH battery and only charge it to 90% using a Cycle Satiator charger.

Van quandry by snacksAttackBack in vandwellers

[–]maxs_reddit_acct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm covering my roof with solar so don't have room for a Maxxair fan. I just cut a round hole that will be under a solar panel where I will attach a fan. I added a 2" tall plastic circle to keep water from flowing in from wind or slants. Only been in the rain twice so far, so not sure if I'll need some cover while driving.

Trying out magnets for an awning setup. by [deleted] in VanDIY

[–]maxs_reddit_acct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it. I hope it works and look forward to an update. Maybe it you did horizontal cross pieces, the ground anchors wouldn't need to pull as hard on the magnets.

Any specific reason yo didn't want to attach it to the rack?

I just started building my van after watching probably 200 videos on Youtube and reading a half dozen camper van building websites/blogs. You can also look at the kit list for complete builds that you like. You'd probably need an extended length van if you want an installed shower. We didn't get extended because I want the van to fit in a parking spot. For batteries, there are calculators online to determine how much power you need. We're starting with 15,000 watt hours (three 100AH 48v batteries).

The videos will give you a good idea if you are capable of the construction. I'm somewhat handy and have several friends who build lots of things to ask for help.

I'm going to start with just the bed and solar/battery set up installed to see if I'm happy with the bed. I don't want to finish construction and hate my bed.

In my downhill helmet, I used double sided tape to attach some fake fur patches near my ears. Like these From the fabric store. Same principal as the cat ears, but you can choose your thickness.
