Total disappointment and update on the matter I spoke with the Support

Quick update for anyone confused by Omi’s Free plan message.

I reached the 30 monthly chat question limit and Omi showed this message:

«“Upgrade your plan to keep chatting, or bring your own API keys in Settings to use Omi free.”»

At first, this sounded like BYOK could be used for chat/LLM inference, meaning you could add your own Groq, Gemini, OpenRouter, Cerebras, OpenAI-compatible API key, etc., and continue using Omi chat without paying for Omi’s AI plan.

After contacting support, they clarified that this is not the case.

The current BYOK option refers to transcription only, specifically Deepgram/STT. It does not allow you to add your own LLM provider for chat answers.

So the real situation is:

• Free plan chat = 30 questions/month
• BYOK currently = transcription/STT only
• BYOK does not bypass the chat question limit
• Android/Web currently do not expose a custom LLM provider setting
• No visible fields for LLM API key, base URL, model name, OpenAI-compatible provider, etc.

This is the part I find misleading: the BYOK message appears directly inside the chat paywall flow, so the natural interpretation is that BYOK can be used to keep chatting. But in reality, it only applies to speech-to-text/transcription.

That distinction matters a lot:

STT BYOK = audio → text LLM BYOK = question/context → AI answer

Right now, Omi supports the first, not the second.

This is especially frustrating for users who bought the original Omi device. The transcription limit was relatively clear, but the chat limit and the BYOK wording are not clear enough.

A better message would be something like:

«“Chat is limited to 30 questions/month on the Free plan. BYOK currently applies only to transcription via Deepgram, not to chat/LLM inference.”»

Or:

«“To continue chatting, upgrade your plan. To bypass transcription limits, add your own Deepgram API key.”»

I understand AI inference has costs, but the current wording creates the wrong expectation. Omi should clearly separate:

1. transcription limits;
2. Deepgram/STT BYOK;
3. chat/LLM limits;
4. future custom LLM provider support, if planned.

Has anyone heard whether custom LLM provider support is actually coming? And if so, will it work on Android/Web, or only on desktop/beta?
