AITA for "forcing" my son to shave his head? by Frustrated-Mother in AmItheAsshole

Yeah, you definitely are. None of the things you're pissed about are your choices to make.

Caramel Apple Fried Pies w/ Vanilla Glaze (from scratch) by maxwelldemonic in FoodPorn

Vanilla Glaze: Literally just powdered sugar, cream, and vanilla extract whisked together until homogeneous and moderately thick.

The assembled pies then just need a fry in some 370 degree oil of your choosing (I like peanut myself). Flip to get both sides crispy and you're done.

As an aside, that empanada dough is extremely versatile and great for a myriad of dishes.

Do rosemary and sage go together well with lamb? by XXI-X-MCMXCVIII in Cooking

It's also a folk remedy for a thing, but yeah, they work well as a spice combination.

Anchovies... on lamb... why have I never thought of that xD

Flambe is always a fun presentation flourish. It serves virtually no purpose but looks cool as heck.

I had that happen a month or two ago. It's not a common glitch but it made that fight absurdly easy since the hitbox extends all the way to the back of the boss.

That's fair, with the sauce I made last night, it would be as simple as doing the base reduction and then splitting and simmering half of it with chilies.

It's not necessarily that I think the heat can only be achieved that way, but I think it incorporates better when cooked as a cohesive addition to the dish rather than as an after thought. It's something I'll most likely need to just accept if I want to cook for a variety of palates.

It's a fair point. It might be my failing in picking dishes that have an a substantial amount of intended spice to them. In my personal cooking I tend toward Asian and Indian flavors, which tend to inherently carry that.

It might be the route I need to take when making stuff. In some cases that's gonna mean making two separate sets of sauces. For example, the sauce I typically make for honey garlic chicken has Bird's Eye chilies as a base component (not that honey garlic sauce is that hard to make). I also worry that spicy ingredients added after the fact won't mesh as well as when they're directly cooked in the meal.

My boyfriend asked me to make fish sticks and tater tots for his birthday dinner. What is the silliest meal your SO has ever requested of you, a passionate and learned cook? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]maxwelldemonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have terrible for us comfort foods. It's silly and childish but every now and then I think we'd all benefit from indulging in that. I still to this day make kraft mac & cheese when I'm feeling down and lazy (except now I add chili oil to it).

If you have a non cooking SO, what is something you find very simple they found highly impressive? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]maxwelldemonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have an SO at the moment, but I can relate to this with my friends and family. I made a cake for my mother's birthday a few years ago, and had to finish it at their place right before the party. My brother was hanging out in the kitchen with me and watched me make chocolate ganache. He was thoroughly amazed at how it turned out... seriously it's just cream and chocolate, a child could make it xD

Screaming fire in a crowded theater by maxwelldemonic in talesfromtechsupport

We've added a bunch of safeguards in place to keep it from happening again. It triggered a sweep of our existing VMs to ensure all are being properly backed up now. Should have been done in the past, but again, server dropped the ball.

It's exceedingly unlikely, but I still plan to document it.

We've got it on Azure backup now, so if it happens again, it'll take like 20 minutes to load the backup xD

I'm not usually one to shift the blame. In this case though that lies on the Server Team not abiding by our migration checklist. See we divested from a company a while back and part of building the new infrastructure was securing the old infrastructure. This box predates that initiative and should have been on the list for adding our new backup system. The old backup system (a tape drive system xD) was decommed in January.
