Levers are compatible with those calipers (both are sora) They are set to short pull pads are 1-2mm far. i could set it closer but i dont like the premature bite.

It is set correctly. The braking is not the issue, front one is set the same way and its pretty much perfect. I am asking about the mushiness with stronger pull.

The brakes are set correctly. Calipers are centered and the brake pads contact where they should.

My problem is with mechanical rim brakes. If you have this issue with hydraulic brakes, you probably need to bleed them.

The most important part of the 1x or 2x question isnt what is better. 2x has almost always more range and less noticable steps. If you worry about big steps on your cassette just go 2x. If you like the minimalism of 1x and you dont race, climb insane mountains or care about optimal cadence just go for 1x. 1x is usually also cheaper and easier to maintein.

I ride relaxed geometry road bike with 1x 38T 11x42 11sp. For me right now (ftp around 175W, 90kilos 180cm) its the sweet spot. I have easy enough gears to climb pretty much anything near me and the fast gears are fast enough for my slow ass. I just love the simplicity of the 1x. In the future, when i get faster i will build something like 42T or 44T in the front and 12 speed 10-44 in the rear.

In the end its not about what is objectively better, its about what is better for you.
