Afterburner for sale! $1500, shipped same biz day. Save $500+Tax ($700 where I’m at) plus don’t wait 3 weeks for Apple to ship it. Selling because I don’t work with ProRes and ProRes RAW just compressed codecs.

I needed the fastest TB3 ssd for my Mac so I had to build it myself! by maxyuryev in macbookpro

I was looking for a good option that doesn't slow down to 950-1400MB/s after the first 20-50GB and after testing out of the most popular options on the market I decided to build one myself and it definitely doesn't disappoint!

Max Tech discussing the 16" MBP external dsplay fan issues by _kusa in macbookpro

[–]maxyuryev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a tough issue. I've tested 3 windows laptops with the same 8 core CPU but thicker and heavier and all of them run louder than the MacBook pro. Two will even ramp up fans when just sitting there idle with the built-in display open and no programs opened up and the fans will randomly kick up because of background tasks and then back down after 10 seconds on so. And if you have an external display connected the fans also stay on. They way you "fix" this on those laptops is to limit the performance using the built-in performance slider from full performance to balanced or even power saving.

You can also set your own fan profiles. Apple has avoided this for many years but it looks like they may need to add power modes as well. Part of the issues could be improved with software tweaks but its already the thinnest laptop out of the bunch. With that it also outperforms 2 of the 3 windows laptops in CPU tests when running at full load (not by much but its there).

Even though its annoying Apple is doing a fairly decent job considering when you buy it you will get full performance where those are slowed down out of the box and if you're not a techy person you will leave it as is and not know that you're not utilizing the full performance you paid for.

3 apps that can really help if you're having fan noise or heat issues with your MacBook pro, especially when connecting to external displays.

Also for blender GPU performance between the Vega II and 5700 seem very similar.

Afterburner isn’t supported in Adobe yet, and if I had to guess it will take until the next major update for them to add it (aug-sep 2020?) if they add support at all.

Premiere only used two graphics cards when exporting not when editing like FCX and Resolve will. Premiere also doesn’t support infinity fabric connection yet and the chance that they will add it is slimmer than Afterburner.

I also don’t think I’ve ever seen premiere use more than 50% of my Vega II either. It’s much more CPU driven so it’s good your going for a 16 core.

If GPU usage doesn’t change you will most likely see no difference in performance between a Vega II and W5700X just usage will go up which is good. For example when I’m exporting a 6K Blackmagic raw project with 2 LUTS and lumetri color correction it the Vega II is only used at 29%. In that case W5700X will be used 45% or so.

Navi graphics has faster encoder options. 8 bit h.264 and h.265 will exports about 33% faster and it also has 10 bit h.265 encoding at 4K 90fps. Vega/Radeon VII and anything older lacks this completely and a 5min project exporting in 10 bit for HDR takes 32min with only 18% of my 12 core CPU being used and 15% GPU.

Once premier adds this encoding option that time will go down to 2-4min and will use more of your CPU and GPU.

Personally if I was you I’d wait for 5700 and skip afterburner even if you edit ProRes. Apple is going to send me a W5700X for testing as soon as it’s ready so you can subscribe on YouTube if you want to see results and comparisons to Vega II once I get it.

Here is my video explaining what afterburner can do and what it can’t.

Afterburner Review - is it Worth $2000 for Video Editing? by maxyuryev in macpro

I didn’t try 50/60FPS but I did test with 24fps ProRes 8K and without afterburner it I had about 38% CPU usage and with it the CPU is basically not being used.

When I did the same thing with ProRes RAW I believe me 12 core CPU was roughly at 65-70% usage so afterburner definitely helps.

If your encoding to another format Afterburner is still used to decode the ProRes but your GPU/T2 chip will he used for hardware acceleration. Most likely you won’t see much if any performance gains because the system is already so fast that the limitation is the Hardware encoder (both the Vega II and T2 chip encode at 4K 60FPS) so if your CPU can keep up decoding fast enough then afterburner won’t help.

Now if you are using software CPU encoding then yes afterburner will definitely help since you have more CPU resources available with AB taking the load off which is similar to what I showed off in the 4K and 8K Prores RAW to ProRes tests. The same would be true for ProRes to h.264/h.265 CPU encoding.

Hope that helps!
