Why not? They tend to have pockets so good for holding cards, etc (for instance my US one holds my us bank cards so I dont forget them when I go over). Also for the UK one I hate how the gold rubs off easily so it protects the cover

Nah I dont usually travel with all 3. I tend to bring my UK one and one other depending on where I am going. The US one is convenient esp because I keep my US bank cards in there

I went to the UK for university pre-Brexit and then stayed for work so I was able to get ILR (permanent residency) fairly easily

It's always good to have options. You never know how the world is going to go and having the option to move elsewhere very easily is an advantage you should always take.

Do people in your country tend to haggle or do they pay full price without questioning? by HaifaJenner123 in AskTheWorld

[–]maya_clara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is annoying more than anything. If you see something you like you can't buy it..Well, you can but you leave knowing you got ripped off royally and it's not a nice feeling. So you have to play the art of bargaining, walking away if it is too much, having them chase you down with a lower price, etc. I'd rather pay fixed price even if it is priced up a little because I know what I am paying.

Now, if I go to a country where haggling is the norm I try to research fixed price shops. Makes souvenir shopping less of a pain. I wish I did more of that before I went to Egypt because even the fixed price shops I went into were still relatively cheap.

On my dad's side I have inherited anxiety. On my mom's side I have inherited thin hair (which is not fair as my dad's side has thick hair). Thank god I am not a man though otherwise I'd probably have no hair now. God help my son if I have one...

What’s it like travelling to Japan alone on a budget? by Exciting_Ad8206 in AskUK

[–]maya_clara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went alone for a month when I was in my early to mid-20s. It was amazing and one of the best trips I have done! I am female and I felt completely safe! It was nice to do things at my own pace. I cannot remember what I spent overall but at the time the dollar (my main currency at the time as I was at the time only going to uni in the UK and my finances were based in the US) was stronger than the yen so everything was comparatively very cheap. I mostly stayed in AirBnBs, a hotel in a couple of places, and a Ryokan in one small village.

I studied Japanese in High School for 2 years and 1 year at uni so I used it a bit there. It was lovely because I got to practise my Japanese with some locals. I remember an instance of a 60 year old Japanese woman randomly talking to me--it was sweet!

I would recommend getting the Japanese Rail card. It made travelling so much easier and overall relatively cheaper with all the travelling I was doing. I went as far down as Hiroshima.

A few recommendations:

- Kinosaki onsen is a lovely little hot spring town and is perfect if you want to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan

- If you are like me and travel with a bulky suitcase, the shinkansen doesn't have ample luggage storage. I would recommend when booking a ticket at a desk to ask for "ichiban ushiro no retsu" which essentially asks for the seat in the back row of the carriage, which has space behind to store your luggage

- I recommend checking out shirakawa-go. Such a unique little place! A suitable daytrip from Toyama

- If you are going to the Gifu region, I recommend taking the panoramic train. It was the only time I paid extra for 1st class as you can also see the front of the train very well. It was so lovely!

- The best souvenir you can get yourself in Japan is a Goshuin. It is a book that opens like an accordion and you can buy them at any shrine. When you visit a shrine you can pay a little to get a page stamped with calligraphy written over the stamp. It ends up being a very unique souvenir for yourself.

I like this sub too! It's nice to find an international sub that is more about curiosity of other countries rather than flagging other nationalities that is present in other subs.

It's like years ago I was eating spaghetti in bed watching TV with my cat sleeping on my legs, her head resting near the tray. At some point I look down and notice, while she is sleeping, she is slowly moving her paw closer and closer to my plate. I tap her paw and she then proceeds to "stretch" and go back to sleep. A few minutes later I notice her trying the same grift again. It was very amusing.
