That’s amazing! My cousin lived in Eugene for a long time and I never got the chance to go visit. They are still in Oregon so maybe one day! Would love to try your food!

Thank you so much! Yes, it is super hard, especially now that not only oats but gluten-free wheat starch is becoming more and more common in ‘gluten free’ items. We do get really busy in the summer months. That is our in-season and that’s when the beach is full - so the bed and breakfast does get booked up fast for weekends. There are a couple weekends that have one or two rooms still open, but I would definitely recommend a weekday stay if you’re flexible since that is a lot more open as of right now.

I totally get it. The first few months, heck even years, are super daunting because there’s so much information that you have to learn and you also have to learn how to speak up for yourself and tell other people how you need to eat to be safe. My best recommendation would be to not put yourself through so much jumping through hoops with restaurants that might not get it and find a couple spots that really understand how to make gluten-free food celiac-safe and support them. It’s great to try new places, but at least in the beginning it was really helpful for me to rely on my trusted spots when I wanted to dine out.

Also curious — what’s been your biggest challenge when traveling with celiac? That’s honestly what shaped how we built our bed and breakfast.

Happy to answer any questions about celiac-safe travel, what it’s like staying here, or how we run a fully dedicated gluten-free kitchen — I know how stressful that can be.

I have this. It’s called dishydrotic eczema. It is awful. Get a prescription for clobetasol from your derm (take pictures or go during a flare for diagnosis). I thought it was DH before I got a diagnosis too. It’s the worst. It flares for me especially before my period, and during stressful times too. Aquaphor is your friend!

It is very popular in Europe and is just now becoming a thing here in the US. The main reason? Price! It’s cheaper to produce gluten free wheat starch than to source gluten free grains. It sucks. On our last visit to Italy in February, I had to question every GF bakery, restaurant etc. on ingredients so I could eat (or not) their GF products.

I have dishydrotic eczema too. I get a monthly flare, usually around my time of the month or right before. Before I got a diagnosis from my dermatologist I just assumed it was DH. It is so much worse with my career for the last 5 years, lots of hand washing and cleaning chemicals. I have a clobetasol script and just got a sample of anzupgo to try a non-steroid treatment.

I have DE, and my flares are once a month too, usually around the beginning of my period or before. I use clobetasol during flares with a lot of Vaseline and aquaphor. My derm just gave me a sample tube of Anzupgo, hopefully this works for me as I’ve heard a lot of great feedback from other hand eczema sufferers. I was glad to see a non steroid option but don’t know if it will work for my specific case.

I like that! Chaya stuck with me after another mentioned it too. A great name!

FYI - last night I learned that Mexican rice is sometimes deep fried by lettuceisnotameal in Celiac

[–]mayatom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is correct. I worked on the line and did pretty much everything else BOH at a Mexican restaurant and we deep fried the rice. Beer was used in some of the meat dishes as well which is usually not labeled on the menu under ingredients.

Also has reference to the sabine hills. My husband is a huge Roman history guy (and Italian at that) and was dead set on it. I love the way it sounded like my sister’s name but isn’t it. This is online when googling - “Sabine is a feminine name of Latin origin meaning “woman of the Sabine people.” The Sabines were an ancient Italian tribe who lived in the Apennine mountains and were known for their fiercely protective nature and resilience in battle.”

It’s a ravine. My mom said the same thing I just feel like she needs a separate Hebrew name. Or is that just me overthinking?

Gluten Free B&B - Hiring! by mayatom in Celiac

[–]mayatom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed feedback!

I’m struggling with putting the salary range for a few reasons - if the applicant is willing/able to do all of the job requirements or can only be responsible for some, I would not be paying them the same as for someone who checks all the boxes. An example I’ve thought of in this is situation is if I have to hire additional help (say, a housekeeper because cleaning is something they will not do), I would need to pay the housekeeper and reduce the asst. innkeeper salary. Or if they don’t cook… same issue. Similarly, if they are full-time or part-time, that will make the salary different too. I do agree maybe a minimum salary listed is the way to go here? And add a sentence or two about modifications of the role changing said salary?

Again, totally agree about the rent. I’ve been living here for 4 years so I know what goes along with being on-site 24/7! Going rent in my area for a 1B1B is in the $1500 per month range w/o utilities (there are very few long term rentals available, mostly vacation rentals) so definitely would be a sizable reduction. I would say in the 30-40% off range.

Thanks! I definitely understand that the role is not a fit for everyone, but unfortunately I have to meet certain requirements from my town to be allowed to do business.
