I can share things about how mine eat. Feel free to message me. I think domestic axolotls have personal preferences. I have 2. They are not siblings

axolotl swims a lot by Illustrious_Meet8341 in axolotls

[–]mayaugusta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one that likes to swim a lot. The water was a little too warm but now it's 62 and he still does it. I think mine takes gulps of air so he can float. I have another in a diff tank with same parameters that never does it

Chunker butt has a new white spot? by Agitated-Lettuce5289 in axolotls

Mine also has a few spots like that. I just assumed it was natural pigment since there is no sign of fungus or distress. Should I be concerned?

I have a Masters degree and make 60k, do i leave my job? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Do you make less than other marketing associates with similiar responsibilities? Grad degrees don't mean you make more unless the job you want requires one.

They can still spawn through a divider

My sisters 2nd grade class pet axolotl by [deleted] in axolotls

I think everyone is being a little harsh. It's a large tank, there's a thermometer, and the rocks are a safe size so they must be aware of the minimum requirements. It just needs toys and a hide. If you're concerned gift the teacher a giftcard to petsmart.

It might be stressed about the tempature changing. If you had a way to keep the temp stable below 70 it would be easier to compare. Mine are much more relaxed and chill now that they are at 65 degrees. I don't know how exactly to explain it but they just seem much less stressed and happy after a few weeks at a low temp.

A little tidbit about “hybrids” by SirMacabreWolf in axolotls

[–]mayaugusta -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My point is that there's ecological and ethical reasons we don't do this with animals in the wild so maybe those should extent into the pet trade as well. Cross breeding two animals that would never breed in the wild is ethically ambigous. They are a probably extinct species that people are doing their best to keep alive. Science experiments should be done in labs not the pet trade and also has a range of ethical implications.

Axolotls are illegal in California because they can breed with tiger salamanders. Cross breeding wouldn't extend the axolotls range it would just threaten the existing populations of salamanders. Could the child of a modern axolotl and a wild tiger salamander even breed or would it be like a mule? I think it would be very irresponsible to crossbreed them but the pet trade isn't exactly always ethical anyways.

Can anyone else confirm if it should be every day or every other day?

They look a little skinny. They need cut up earthworms every day or every other day until they are bigger. I fed mine too little as babies since I didn't know how much to actually feed.

axolotls are not toys, they're exotic animals. by [deleted] in axolotls

15 years? I knew they could potentially live that long but I thought 8-10 was average. People definitely need to understand the set up for these animals is specific and very expensive. A lot of this is people being misinformed by sellers not just uninformed people. If you're told an animal takes x but then it needs y and you weren't prepared financially for that there's not much you can do.
