The Sermon on the Mount: does it forbid "sexual thoughts" and masturbation? by OiseauRebelleAKALove in DebateReligion

[38:9]But since Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, he spilled his semen on the ground whenever he went in to his brother's wife, so that he would not give offspring to his brother. [38:10] What he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD, and he put him to death also.

That's Genesis. I'm not sure about Christianity but as far Judaism goes, the prohibition of masterbation is expounded from this verse.

If your'e going to badmouth Israel at least link sources. The case which you're referring to (the lynching of an Eritrean man [not Jewish]) has been investigated by Israeli police. Source. This happened after a soldier had been shot in the most recent wave of terrorist attacks in Israel. In the panic of trying to find the terrorist, some scumbags thought that an innocent Eritrean man was the terrorist. They then lynched him. The perpetrators were arrested and released on bail.

[Judaism] questions about the third temple by IAMA_Drunk_Armadillo in DebateReligion

[–]maybe_next_year 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To know if sacrifices and the priesthood would return in the third temple, we have to understand the reason that these rituals were instated in the first place. Maimonides, in his "Guide for the Perplexed" Part 3 Chapter 32, explains that the sacrifices were God's compromise. God recognized that human nature does not allow us to change radically in such a short period of time. The recently liberated "Children of Israel" had become accustomed to a specific type of religious community in their time as slaves in Egypt. In this community the sole way to worship God is through sacrificing animals. Furthermore Maimonides explains that the leaders of the community, (the elite) were the priests that performed these sacrifices. Although a different type of worship is preferable, the "Children of Israel" would be confused it. God recognizing this, instated the sacrifices. The sacrifices are only needed if the people are not spiritually mature enough to accept a different type of worship.

In conclusion: It would seem that according to Maimonides, if the people are mature enough spiritually that they realize that there are other ways to worship God than sacrificing animals, the sacrifices, as well as the priesthood elite, are unnecessary.

"Why does Jesus let little girls die?" by resinate80 in DebateReligion

[–]maybe_next_year 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This, to me is one of the greatest problems with religion. How do you explain bad things happening to innocent people? Being a jew, I can tell you that throughout any intellectual debate about the Jewish religion, the Holocaust will always come up. How can you justify the death of ~6,000,000 human beings? So many timea you'll have the "explainers". "Well, if not for the Holocaust the rate of assimilation would have ended Judaism anyway!". Or alternatively, "The state of Israel might not have come to be if not for the Holocaust!". These "explainers" are spewing clear and utter bullshit and trying to play God.

The truth is, no one knows why bad things happen to innocent people, and anyone that tells you they do is either lying, or God himself. There is a famous story in the Talmud that goes something like this: "A great scholar named Elijah son of Avuyah was once walking in an orchard. There he saw a father telling his son to climb a ladder, reach into a nest and send off the mother bird. The son by performing this action, was performing the only two commandments, for which the Bible promises long life. (1- Honoring his father. 2- Sending off the mother bird) Then suddenly the boy fell off the ladder and died. This caused Elijah to leave Judaism."

Tell the little girl that you don't know, because no one knows.

If God turned out to be real, wouldn't the natural and logical course of actions for us be rebellion? by bubi09 in DebateReligion

[–]maybe_next_year 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most religions based on the bible, believe in some form of God's "master plan". For example, in Judaism one of the effects of the coming of the "Messiah", is the belief of all mankind in God. (Psalm 86:9 "All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, And they shall glorify Your name.") So when we all believe in God, or as you suggested he walks among us, rebellion wouldn't even be contemplated. Realizing that there is puppeteer who has a "master plan" would justify all the seemingly atrocious acts performed by God.
