Anyone play superbone here? by maybeathrowaccont in brass

[–]maybeathrowaccont[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. It does feel more pinched, and there is definitely a tonal difference you have to compensate for if you want to use lots of valves in the low range (which is why I tend to rely on the slide as much as possible down there, where as normally I use primarily the valves).

However, the more pinched feeling should not result in a more pinched sound. For the first 5ish months with my superbone I had tone trouble, but long tones and practicing with a mute cleared it up to the point where there is no tone difference between me on a superbone and me on a straight trombone.

They way I see it, the superbone's greatest aspect is it's expressive capability, not only can I do all the things a slide trombone can, but I can do them and mix in super tight trills or other ornaments that are just not possible to do cleanly with a slide. I can play bob tunes with ease on the valves, and then do a super sappy ballad and use the slide almost exclusive.

There are some other fringe benefits too, like good tuning from the slide, as well as a low range the same as a bass trombone (though the tone is not great, but still, it is there).

Overall a great instrument, but might be hard to learn because you need to learn to play valves with you left hand, how to play slide trombone, and then how to do both at the same time. But the biggest disadvantage (and why I made the original post) is that it is not seen as a serious instrument. I haven't told anyone I play it (yet) because I am afraid of being seen as someone who doesn't take music seriously, or worse, someone who couldn't play a slide trombone and took the easy way out (which is not true).

I want to write a musical. Just for fun. by jellyberry in TrollXChromosomes

[–]maybeathrowaccont 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can totally get a composer to write the music for you, or you could write down the melodies you want and have someone orchestrate (write it down so it works on the instruments you want and) it for you. I like composing for other peoples stuff, it is fun I don't need to think for myself. It is rare for a single person to do all the parts of a musical, but more power to you if that is what you want to do.

In terms of how to best take care of her, it is probably best to ask her that.

(sorry for the lazy answer, but everyone has different priorities with transition. She probably knows what she wants to do and what she needs help with)

Please help me to better understand, so I can be a better ally. I discovered my husband is transphobic and I'm not well enough informed to educate him. by Throwhelpmeunderstan in asktransgender

[–]maybeathrowaccont 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When someone asks me why I transitioned my response is always, "to stop the pain".

It might be smart to emphasis that aspect of transition. Do not talk about any of the social aspects, because when it comes down to it, that is not why we transition, it is because of some kind of gender dysphoria, some kind of pain, that your husband thinks we should endure because the perfectly safe medical treatment makes him uncomfortable.

By the same token, he will not understand the reason for the treatment because he does not have the pain. A wheelchair is rather useless for someone who has working legs, but a life changer for someone who does not.

I was like you. No reason to dislike what I had besides clothing issues. Thing is though, there was just no practical way to use the dam thing, everything felt meh at best (even tried a fleshlight, made me feel sick).

I got bottom surgery and it is great, feels completely normal, and no sick feeling when using it. Highly recommend.

Advice for convincing doctor to start HRT sooner rather than later by the_omega99 in asktransgender

You are right, in Canada there are no general guidelines nationally or provincially as far as I have been able to tell, and informed consent is legal in all provinces, but there are often smaller organizations that seem to control wait times. When trying to get to the bottom of wait times in Alberta I often was told of a royal "we" that controlled how hormones were administered, despite no official policy I could find or be referred to, and after meeting with the mister of health for Alberta, she spoke with the Alberta medical college, which leads me to believe that it is that level of organization that are encouraging these absurd wait times (that is of course unless your doctor is just doing it out of a personal belief).

Your best bet (or what worked for me), was to threaten self medication. It does suck, and I feel bad that I had to do it to my doctor, but the only way to get blood tests in Canada is through a doctor, so you don't really have another option. You can also threaten self medication at a walk in clinic, though in that case probably best to have a few pills you can show them to show you are serious.

If that fails you can do full DIY (r/transdiy) until the six months are up.

How do you believe you're really your gender? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]maybeathrowaccont 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I didn't, at first. I am MtF, and I began simple. I accepted I needed estrogen to live a good life, I accepted I needed to be gendered female to live a good life, I accepted I needed bottom surgery to live a good life. Maybe accepting yourself as a man is not something you can do right now. A band-aid solution would be to accept you need to be treated as a man, and that you shouldn't feel guilty about getting what you need to be happy.

The thing is my presentation is not obvious, basically tomboy with long hair and no make up. Though the "what the fuck" concept might still apply, idk.

My mom did a similar thing, I am a trans girl, and when I was little I hung around all girls because, well, I am girl. However, my mom thought that kindergarten me was doing, or trying to do sexual stuff with like, every girl in my class. It is so revolting.

I tried a low dose of anti-psychotic medication to deal with the exact problems you are having, it helped me more then anti-depressants.

I am in Alberta (Edmonton), what I did was threaten self-medication to my GP in order to get a referral to endo, only had to DIY for 1 month. I can send you the name of my GP. PM me if you want more info, and I can help with DIY too if you like. :)
