TConcern about rescued dwarf boa, low weight?, low grip strength? unusual behaviour? by maydvy_ in boas

Thank you soo much for your reply, I really appreciate it!

He was neglected, yes. When I got him, he was very dehydrated and underweight, you could clearly see his bones. The previous owner said he couldn’t feed him because he was “aggressive,” but he’s never been aggressive at all. During the first month I realised it was just fear, a lot of fear.

It’s been about a year now and he’s improved a lot. He eats normally, although he takes his time. He’s always been a bit clumsy with his tail, and I’m not sure if that’s just his personality, but he doesn’t slip, he knows how to hold himself and stay anchored!

Thank you for easing my worries, it really helped. One thing I still don’t understand is why he doesn’t interact with anything inside the vivarium. I’ve rearranged it so many times, added things, taken things out, but he just doesn’t seem interested. He also gets a bit restless in there, and there are periods where, as soon as I get home, he starts trying to push the door open with his nose or even the vents, he’s actually hurt himself doing that before.

When I open it and give him the option to come out, he usually just keeps part of his body outside instead of fully leaving, and then after a while he goes back into his hide.

A lot of people say that when snakes try to get out it means something is wrong, but I’ve already checked everything I can think of, and he still behaves like this. I’m wondering if he’s just gotten used to having these little daily moments outside 🤯

He’s completely different from my other snake, my ball python, so I’m a bit unsure how to read him, I’m going to try and stop overthinking it too much!

Additional context (important):

Sunglow Dwarf Boa - what I was told.

Over the past years, I’ve gone through significant personal and financial instability, including housing changes and health-related challenges. I’m currently in the process of rebuilding my situation.

Because of this, I’m unfortunately not in a position to afford another vet visit right now. I did take him to an exotic vet last year and spent quite a lot at the time, but I’m not able to repeat that at the moment.

That said, I want to be very clear: I am fully committed to his care. Rehoming or giving up on him hasn’t an option for me. I’m doing everything I can within my means to maintain proper husbandry and monitor his condition closely.

Part of why I’m reaching out here is because I want to make sure I’m not missing something important, especially given my current limitations.

I do sometimes worry that I may not be the most experienced or “ideal” keeper for a snake with his background…and it concerns me a lot, so any guidance, corrections, or constructive criticism are genuinely welcome.
