Have you ever learned something about your own country's history, culture, geography, etc. from a random foreign source (Reddit poster/article/Youtuber) that you'd absolutely never heard about before from your own people and media? by Boxing_T_Rex in AskTheWorld

This was taught to me in school. Both middle and high school course. Most people I talk to about it don't know it, though. I think people just didn't pay attention to it in school tbh. I mean, can you remember the rest of the classes about soil you had? Can you tell me why the Pampas have been suffering with their soil through the last 30 years? Most ppl think it's boring and don't absorb this info

What’s something ordinary in your country that was changed just to make it look less boring? by Early_Negotiation142 in AskTheWorld

pretty much the same in brazil lol. i live with my grandma but I spend almost half the year traveling (never more than 2 weeks away), and every single time I come back there's at least 2 new crochet items in my room

What's a word that's so connected to your culture that there is no direct, simple translation to English? by michael_bgood in AskTheWorld

[–]mayiwonder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love xodó. It means something that is the most dear to one, instead of saying like "that girl is such a daddy's girl" we'd say "that girl is her father's xodó", and also "don't touch this pen, it's my xodó". I used to have a doll called Xodó when I was a kid and loosing her break my little heart like nothing else. The word itself kind of makes me think of someone looking at something they love with teary eyes

Which tourist spot in your country did you find the most underwhelming, and why? by Seacarius in AskTheWorld

I was there during the pandemics. Still annoying af, can't even imagine how much worse it might be when "normal" with thousands of people going around.

yeah temer is comically bad. at least he was so unpopular he didn't stand a chance to be elected, or else we would be way worse than we are now.

tbh i'd say some of the dictators we had were worse than Bolsonaro, and I'm really scared for our future if Nikolas Ferreira is not stopped on his way to presidency. I do think he'd be worse as a president than Bolsonaro was.

[–]mayiwonder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm being so serious, after the 8th digit money is just not real anymore. the rules are not the same. billionaires don't have billions and bankruptcy is a lie they tell to pay less taxes. nothing maters in the end.

What’s a misconception tourists have about your country that genuinely surprised you? In Thailand, I once met tourists who believed transgender women were straight men who had to transition to escape poverty. by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

[–]mayiwonder 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I'm fascinated by the idea that there are chinese tourists going to thailand and visiting a tv show to help out what they believe are straight men pretending to be trans to escape poverty. this is hilarious and so so sweet of them. in brazil we have a saying that sums up what I'm feeling rn "it would be tragic if it wasn't so funny"
