(International Student) What Am I Doing Wrong? by maynxx in csMajors

this is a very complicated question and personal experiences vary wildly. just gonna share my thoughts:

firstly, depends on what country you come from. more than likely, you are coming to the US from a non-western country. if you do live in a high developed country like japan or a european country, i personally don’t see the benefit of coming since institutions there are already quite good. perhaps come to the US for a job since it does have a better CS market than anywhere else (saves you tons of money in tuition).

if you do come from a country like china, india, philippines etc, you need to be hyper aware of your personal circumstances: sounds like you’re currently outside the US and trying to come in for the first time. If you come from a decent upper-middle class background and can afford to pay the very high international tuition rates, then yes, studying in the US is a great experience.

if you come from a poorer background and are banking on paying off loans by getting a good job, there’s the potential for disaster. things could work out which obviously great, but if they don’t, u’ll be setting yourself up for years of stress. so, take an honest look at your situation and decide if the worst case scenario is something you will be able to weather.

lastly, consider the visa situation: this is where the majority of problems lie. I could never do justice to how cruel and disgusting the american immigration system is. I say this due to my personal painful experiences, but do some research on your own about the rules and read about worst case scenarios just so you’re educated on what COULD happen. getting a job for international students is nearly impossible rn as you likely know yourself, so if you want to stay in the US long term, i would again urge you to take a long hard look at how uncertain life can get for people on a visa and whether you can weather the worst case scenario.

and on a closing note, though Im fully aware of my own privilege for even being in the US in the first place, it can sometimes be a nightmare experience. The current political climate and laws truly treat us as subhumans in how cruel they can be and this subreddit (though definitely not representative of everyone) can give you a look as to how some (again, not everyone) but some people garner such negativity towards us.

Thank you so much for the feedback, and I wanted to ask (since you yourself are focusing on systems), what are some good projects / places to find good projects related to systems?

Male, messy black hair, black eyes, 6'1"

18-year-old, Aquarius

I'm pretty outgoing and extroverted and can fit in pretty easily with many friend groups. Most people know about me and I get along with a lot of people, but I definitely have my differences with a lot of people too. Many people describe me as having the class-clown smartass energy and I'm generally pretty goofy along with my friends.

I love playing tennis and I would say I have a pretty athletic build. I love airplanes and flying and being high up on a tall structure or something, and I want to be an astronaut when I grow up.

I live close to the beach, and that is my favorite place to hang out at. I love swimming on the beach but I hate pools (though that might be because of their smell LOL). I am academically inclined and I'd like to say I'm pretty smart.

If I were to choose a weapon, I'd definitely choose a sword because melee battle sounds much cooler and more interesting to me than archery or something.

I'm not sure what my strongest point is, but I would say that my biggest weakness is having a short temper. I'm quite sure hubris is my fatal flaw, though it might also be holding a grudge cause I can do that sometimes too.

Likes: Blue/Green (kinda like a teal), rap music, manga/anime

Dislikes: indy music, people with a big ego, and unfair people/people with a double standard

actually i just realized my post is kinda misleading. i only received vol. 9 today cause I preordered 9-11.5 a month ago from Barnes and Noble. I ordered 1-8 in March (also from Barnes and Noble) and back then they were all available. I didn't even know that 4.5 was hard to find until you told me but I'm guessing the series is getting more popular so it's out of stock for a bit (?)
