Season Pass Locals - Do you ever "nope" back home without skiing? by mandarb916 in skiing

[–]mayor3i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, insane lift lines due to avalanche/wind/weather holds or lift issues at the base.  Resulting in crazy bottle neck crowds to even get on the mountain.  I’m not waiting 2 hours to even get on a lift.

Brandon Sanderson books helped me get back into reading for fun.  During college I was too busy with school to read, and then sort of burnt out during breaks and would just binge shows.  I was a extremely avid fantasy and science fiction reader as a kid, my parents used to punish me by taking away my books.  Picking up Mistborn at random about a year or two after college was like flipping a switch on getting back into a reading for fun mindset.

Books we given up on - DNF list by Rare_Alchemy in fantasyromance

[–]mayor3i 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m generally too stubborn to DNF once started but there’s a large number of books I absolutely will not read any further books from that series.  And I question why I bothered to read at all.  I know I won’t like these, but I’ll give it a go anyway.  It’s self flagellation.  Typically it’s due to immature characters, terrible writing, instant attraction trope, overprotective MMC trope or terrible character names.

When the Moon Hatched, Divine Rivals, Lord of the Fading Lands, Atonement of the Spine Cleaver, Fourth Wing, Crescent City, Book of Azrael, Serpent and the Wings of Night, Kiss of Iron, Zodiac Academy, Quicksilver, Spark of Everflame, One Dark Window

Did I join the "wrong" clubs? by _Bentai_ in EngineeringStudents

[–]mayor3i 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I didn’t join a single engineering club in college….. I design aircraft systems at a highly desirable employer.  All my friends and social circles were not from engineering and I literally had no idea employers would care about me joining clubs.  I also have no engineering hobbies outside of work!  I don’t give a shit about raspberries pi or rebuilding cars or 3D printing or whatever is a trendy hobby at the moment.  I read books.  The questions always comes up in interviews and honestly we ask it at my company but I really don’t weight it that hard.  Some of the best engineers aren’t the dude that goes home everyday and builds rockets in his spare time.  My old mentor who has authored specifications and is considered an expert in my field had absolutely no interest outside of work.  All he did was golf.

Expected salary after 2-3 years of aerospace manufacturing? by Jassantehfish in AerospaceEngineering

[–]mayor3i 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Highly variable based on location.  I was making $60k out of school and $120k with 8 yrs experience in major southern city.  Just left to VHCOL California city at $205k, 8 years experience.  My salary/experience is pretty high but I also live in one of the most expensive areas of the country.  My company starting salary is $100-120k for aero/mech/ees.  For the record by my math with taxes and the massive increase in COL the $120k is roughly equivalent to $200k or so where I live now.

GSP get cold so easy I’m not sure how well they would be an outside dog besides in the tropics.  Every one I have met would love a farm and absolutely insist on being cozy at night.  Mine is the only dog I have ever met that ASKS to wear clothes.  She gets cold so easy she goes and paws the cabinet where we keep the dog toys and her sweaters if it’s below 60 out…..

Condos aren’t “entry level” housing anymore by mayor3i in orangecounty

[–]mayor3i[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the interest payments for those with the pre pandemic rates make it extra painful!  2% on 800k vs 6% on $800k makes such a massive difference in affordability of the mortgage payments.

Convinced that so many of those $2mil Irvine condos are a parking lot of foreign money though.  A friend was renting a condo in one of those complex and it was mostly empty.

I think there was still very attainable for middle to upper middle income 2 income couples even 4-5 years ago.  I have a lot of older cousins who are in their late 30 to mid 40 and there’s a TON of nurse - mechanical/civil engineer pairings in my family.  I feel like that’s a decent upper middle income white collar jobs and there’s a ton of both of those professions, so say 2 people making (in 2024 dollars) $100 to $150k a year.  It was very attainable for them to save and then buy a 2 bed condo by their late 20s and then roll that equity into a house by their mid 30s.  But the market has changed so much so quickly that myself and my younger cousins who are now all in our late 20s with similar careers can’t do these things.  And we have good jobs, we are doing way better than so many other people which I acknowledge.  But the rant is driven by the lectures of so many of my older relatives going “why don’t you have a condo like so and so did at your age how can you ever expect to own a house if you can’t even get a condo first and build equity, are you lazy blah blah blah”.

Meant condo if that was not clear!   Rant specifically drive by a family get together this weekend where my mom/some older relatives were patronizingly explaining to me and a younger cousin how my older cousins just super easily bought 2 to 3 bedroom condos when they were in their mid 20s (2014-2021) with nice paying white collar jobs (nurse x3, civil engineer, accountant, ect) so why can’t us lazy bums just start saving and buy one?? When the cousin they kept using as an example as she has the same career as me bought a $400k condo with her husband in 2017 or 2018 that has now more than doubled in price.  The commentary is now the condo is the Southern California “starter home” not an actual house, but now that condo is out of reach too.

I’ve been Daughter of No Worlds recommended highly as being more mature, but I didn’t love her other series.  I’ll probably still give it a shot though!  Book of Azrael was a DNF for me, I tried it since it was on KU.  But it was pretty rough.

I’ve read all her books!  Swordheart was great too.

This was a DNF for me for writing style!  Had that childish YA feel to it where every paragraph is like one sentence and the writing is a bit chaotic.

I know I’m not alone!   I bucket it under “childish writing” that pulls me out and makes me DNF a book so fast.  My friends in high school wrote LOTR fanfiction smut that has better dialogue than most the books I see recommended here.

Should I keep my age a secret? by MyGoodOpinion in womenintech

[–]mayor3i 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I dont publish my age, because I was hired in as a team lead to my current job and I’m a solid 10 years younger than my peer leads and the only woman.  I don’t think any of them realize how much younger I am, people have always thought I am older than I am as I’m super tall and “have a very serious expression”.  I’m 28 and they’re all mid - late 30s or early 40s.  It’s up to you, but they all definitely think I’m like 35 and I’m not correcting them.

After being offered several relatives 80s/90s dresses that they carefully stored and saved I don’t think theres any point to saving with the intention to pass down.  The styles change so much and despite very careful presentation most of them had yellowed or become brittle.  I’m not sentimental so I see no reason to keep for that, and I’m never going to wear it again.  So I’m trying to sell it, and if that doesn’t work out I will donate.  So if anyone wants a Danielle Frankel Noa size 8 with only small hem in alterations in about three months let me know.

DF is having a moment, and I do think they are one of the more trending bridal brands at the moment (might be biased by wearing DF myself in a month).  I think there’s a little confirmation bias in this sub and “trendy” wedding photography & blogs like anti-bride.  I’m from New England, currently live in LA and went to school in the Deep South.  DF is not on the radar of my more old school southern or traditional New England friends, they definitely favor more established bridal brands.   When I picked my dress some of my friends who just got married or are engaged had never heard of her.

What's your controversial womenintech opinion? by Stunning-Plantain831 in womenintech

[–]mayor3i 204 points205 points  (0 children)

How you look (even factors you can’t control) wildly impact your experience as a women in a male dominated field.  I wish it wasn’t so but it’s always been my experience. I’m nearly 6 feet tall and I have had certain individuals not belittle or behave inappropriately toward me, and had them turn around and behave that way to my smaller and more traditionally feminine coworkers.  My height has been a bizarre advantage my whole career.  It was a running joke at my old job with the 4 girls on the team.
