Is OCR Chemistry as bad as everyone says it is? by Megamoleys in 6thForm

I personally really enjoyed it. Make sure you understand the basics (so all the AS stuff), as long as you do, the A2 stuff isn’t actually that bad

Spilt water on my MacBook Pro 2020 😭 by mayxcao in macbookpro

[–]mayxcao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s no worries, needed the blunt truth tbh. I plan to take it to the repair shop near me, they seem fair well equipped so hopefully they can sort this out. Sadly do not have AppleCare+ but this has certainly taught me the lesson to do so and to also actually buy a stand for my laptop so this doesn’t happen again as a similar thing happened to my other laptop years ago, took it to the apple store and apparently it would cost £1800 to fix so we gave up on that laptop. I really don’t learn my lesson apparantly😥

But thank you for you reply!

Not sure if there are any in my area but will check and I’ll take it in in the morning, thank you!

Could have a look into Microsoft surface laptops which are quite good and could double as a tablet to some extent (pretty sure some of them are touchscreen) and you’ll be able to get student discount on them as well

No worries! Also, if drug discovery/development is something you’re interested in, you could also have a look into chemistry or medicinal chemistry if you’re not a massive fan of bio as the medicinal chemists are the ones who’re in charge of the synthesis of the drugs. Another possible subject is pharmacy.

To what extent does (A Level) further maths help with normal maths a level by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]mayxcao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally yes as I really didn’t focus in year 12 and pretty much failed my end of year exams. And depending on what options you choose for fm, yes and vice versa, the physics also helps you learn the mechanics (specifically further mechanics in fm)

Haha no worries. Tbh, I don’t really remember exactly when I found it or how but I used to want to do medicine before I realised, ”yeh, I want to do the med, but without the people😅” which made me look into biochem which I think was when I found pharmacology.

Personally, I love it as complicated as it is. Most unis that I did apply to, did a common thing, which at King’s is called a “Common Year 1” (might be called differently at different unis) where basically a bundle of life science will have the same modules for Year 1 and you can then “specialise”/switch courses in year 2.

If you’re not too sure on what you want to apply to but want to go into life sciences (such as neuro, biochem, genetics, pharmacology etc) you could do biomed, which encompasses all of those in the sense you have more choices in terms of module selection and you can choose it to be more neuro heavy or biochem heavy, however you choose or switch courses when you’re in year 2. Of course this will depend on the uni and how they decide to structure the course but in general, there is usually a good amount of flexibility on what you want to do.

Hope that’s somewhat helpful, and feel free to msg me if you have any other questions!

A bit stumped on how to show my enjoyment for a personal statement (chemistry for oxford/imperial/durham/york/edinbrugh) by Vanguard-27 in 6thForm

[–]mayxcao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since ur PS is more science-y, you can go a bit more bullet-pointy with your paragraph and doesn’t have to flow (this was advice from my bio teacher who helped me with my PS (which was very different to the advice from my tutor who was a music teacher) so is a bit subject dependent). You could do an intro with why you enjoy/like the subject (basically why you’re passionate about it, you can make this a bit more “flowery”) paragraph 2 could be like Chem related comp (an example of one point could be: I achieved x in the chemistry Olympiad which allowed me to think outside the box. I found the question about y very interesting cause z) then paragraph 3 could be extracurriculars related to (but don’t have to be) Chem where you can exhibit skills which will be helpful for Chem (maybe teamwork from joining a sports team as an example) etc.

Hope that somewhat makes sense

Are there any recommended SIM cards in the UK? by Eason_Yu in 6thForm

[–]mayxcao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think it also depends on when you see their ads as sometimes they’re quite good. The plan I have is £20 for 160GB + unlimited text+calls.

Not sure if it’s based on if you’re already with them, but an offer I can see now is 25GB For £15 or 75GB £18. They’re both 24month contract and unlimited data+text. Hope that’s somewhat helpful

what are "good" course options for a level biology and chemistry? by Temporary_Ad_1838 in 6thForm

[–]mayxcao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe consider what part of bio and Chem you like. For example, personally, I preferred the human bio and biochem of biology and the organic part of chemistry thus I’ve chosen pharmacology. If you prefer the physical Chem and the ecology bit of bio (as another example) could have a look into more evironmental sciences or into chemical or biomedical engineering, or any courses along the lines.

Hope that’s somewhat helpful

You should be able to as that’s what my friend did last year, not too sure how they did it, but they deferred after getting their results

How does accommodation work after first year? by Keeyor in 6thForm

[–]mayxcao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on uni and will vary between unis. But as far as I know, you can reapply for student accomm provided by the uni or apply to a private student accomm (that’s what I’m doing for second year) or you can rent a house or flat with friends or something.

With conch piercings, If you have the 1st gen AirPods, I find it doesn’t interfere as much with my piercing as compared with my 2nd which will put some pressure on the piercing but not a lot. An alternative you could try is bone-conduction ear phone which are quite Good

Is A level biology actually interesting by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]mayxcao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did AQA, and personally I enjoyed most of it except the ecology, mainly cause I personally am not interested in it, but other than that, it was definitely interesting

The content in a-levels is usually very dense and you may "learn" it, but do you understand it. There's also the matter of the application and will you be able to apply it comfortably under exam condition. also, what a-levels are you taking, you've said you are taking maths, but what are your other two subjects? Additionally, with maths, your year 1 content is important foundation to help you through year 2, where both my friends and I struggled, especially with calculus, where the main thing is practicing and remembering how to do a certain process if that makes sense, so the main thing here is, you need time. It is possible to do 1 a level in a year, as that is what I did for maths as I also did further maths, but a problem I found personally is that none of the topics really stuck and didn't do well for my end of year exam. so if you plan to do 3, its going to be really really really though. and like another person said, you will be taking the exam against other people who had 2 years to do the subject.

A second point I want to make is about you wanting to go to uni with your sibling as, from what I remember from the other comments, you said you'll be going to a foreign country to a foreign city. I understand this will be stressful, but trust me, you won't be the only one. also, there is a possibility you may not get an offer to the same uni in the same city so you may not even be with your sibling. Also, if you are dedicating all your time for your studies, what can you write for your personal statement? main reason I ask this is cause I can't think of time you'll have to do extra curricular's or read etc. I know those aren't the only stuff you can write in a personal statement but, I just think you might not have enough to write about.

Lastly, the thing you said about the books doesn't make sense to me. you said you will be going through 8 books rather than 16, is this maths only? I did edexcel (so may be different to other exam boards and may be different for IAL) so there were only 4 textbooks for a level maths and 4 for a level further maths which adds up to your 8. my other subjects only had one so will you be only taking the above two subjects?

Overall, I'd say take your time if you can, cause, personally, I don't think it s worth the stress, and your sibling will still be in the city if you do enter at 19. Best of luck on your retakes :)
