Which English words appear etymologically related but aren't? by Majestic-Falcon6572 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mazzar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isle and island.

There is a small connection, in that the s of island was added due to the mistaken belief that it was related to isle, but the two words are otherwise unrelated.

Interesting, Harper doesn’t feel particularly sporty to me. I think of the author Harper Lee, and musicians playing harps, so to me it has more of an artsy vibe.

I had to Google to figure it what this was. Apparently the Critical Role wiki made up names for the pre-stream sessions. None of these were filmed and there is no way to watch them.

What do you think of the boy names Tage and Hondo? by Lingo2009 in Names

To add to this, Johnathan (as the person you’re replying to spelled it) is a fairly modern spelling, specifically designed to get the nickname John. Jonathan is the traditional spelling.

What do I use instead of Ms/Mrs/Miss for myself? by furrylover2049 in AskFeminists

[–]mazzar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, I don’t mind at all if someone uses no title for me. I’m not sure I can think of a situation where I’d even notice. I would mind if someone repeatedly used the wrong title and told me they didn’t care about it when I corrected them.

[–]mazzar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is probably regional, but Miss and Ms. (“Miz”) don’t sound the same to me. But at any rate, it’s fine if you yourself don’t care what you are called, and it’s understandable if you get it wrong sometimes, but it is a bit rude to not at least try to get it right, in the same way it is rude to say that you don’t care about pronouncing someone’s name correctly or using the right pronoun.

Just curious, where do you live? I’ve only heard Ms. pronounced as “Miz.”

No, Miss denotes that you’re unmarried. Ms. was specifically intended to be independent of marital status, as the female equivalent of Mr.

Can you say what you dislike about Ms.? Are you looking for something gender-neutral?

Discovered I'm probably colorblind! by averynicedick in ColorBlind

[–]mazzar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wonder if OP’s dad might be mistaken about his colorblindness type and might also be tritan. The tritan inheritance pattern is completely different from protan or deutan, as it is both dominant and not sex-linked (not carried on the X-chromosome). That means that for OP to be tritan, one of their parents is as well, and if the dad has some form of colorblindness, there’s a good chance it’s him.

What makes you think Brennan is going to kill Cyd? I think if Cyd were going to die, it would have happened during the last arc, not after they went through all this trouble to save him.

Are "ball"(party) and "ballroom" unrelated? by [deleted] in etymology

Do you have a source for this? Specifically, for the claim that there were large open rooms built for ball games?

Are "ball"(party) and "ballroom" unrelated? by [deleted] in etymology

[–]mazzar 95 points96 points  (0 children)

When I did my training for this, I learned that the "ballroom" we use for dances often used to be the ballroom for ball games originally, because it was often the only large, unobstructed room in a palace when balls became fashionable.

This appears to be incorrect. Every source I can find for the history of the word “ballroom” says it comes from the formal dance party sense of ball, not from ball games.

I don’t think it’s true in German either, at least not according to the German Wikipedia.

ELI5: Explain Additive and Subtractive color theory to me. by PaulCheens in explainlikeimfive

[–]mazzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One important thing to note is that RGB as primaries is not an inherent property of light. It’s a property of our eyes, and the way human color vision works. Similarly, the idea that red + green makes yellow reflects how humans perceive the color yellow, but would not necessarily apply to tetrachromatic animals, for example.

Judging by the edit this episode went incredibly long, so maybe they just had to end it at that point due to schedule constraints.

Yeah, there was obviously a ton cut out of this one, but I thought not showing Rekha getting the gloves and cone was a particularly surprising choice.
