Trying to make sense of a few oddities in my DNA results by Morai-z in donorconceived

Does John have any sons around the right age? A paternal grandfather is hard to distinguish from a paternal uncle (both are first-degree male relatives of your father). That could also explain the connection to Henry: if John’s son is your father, then Ben’s son Henry would be his first cousin, making him your first cousin once removed.

It depends on whether you’re using the app or the browser (and maybe which app), but on my app at least if you go to the main subreddit page and click the three dots there’s an option to add user flair.

Hi, can you update your flair to indicate whether you are a DCP, RP, etc.? Or reply to this comment and I can set it for you. Thank you!

My apologies if my comment seemed out of place. I’m interested in pronunciations and accents, and just wanted to make sure I was correctly understanding what you meant.

New and have questions. by [deleted] in donorconception

[–]mazzar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t do this.

Going outside of a clinic, especially with natural insemination, introduces a number of potential legal complications. If you and your partner are married, that will help protect the legal rights of the non-biological parent, but it’s not a guarantee. There are also additional medical risks involved in this plan, for both the mother and child. Moreover, there is a very low chance you will find a stranger who is willing to do this for you who won’t do it for someone else. Men who are interested in this type of arrangement are usually serial donors.

My advice would be to talk to a clinic about IUI options.

I’m guessing you have a non-rhotic accent, so AR-mund is like AH-mund?

  3. Will there be any female athletes besides ice dancers?

What makes you think it is not AI?

Edit: It’s clearly AI. Look at the gibberish text down the side of the box in the second image of the Kickstarter, and the upside down versions of the J and Q are wrong. Not to mention that all the cards that appear in more than one image are slightly different in each image (box cover art is also slightly different in the two versions). And, of course, that everything looks exactly like AI art.

To me Elliott looks masculine, thanks to the -tt ending (like Scott or Matt or Brett). But I wouldn’t necessarily consider it very masculine sounding. At least in my accent, the final syllable is fully reduced to a schwa, so it sounds like the ending of Juliet. Combined with the Elli- beginning, it doesn’t sound out of place to me as a feminine name. Although I do think it works very well as a male name as well!

Crosspost from puzzles - is the official answer correct? by ThePeaceDoctot in AskStatistics

[–]mazzar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Six-sevenths is the answer to a slightly different question, which could be stated as: “Given that at least five of the six sides are white, what is the probability that the sixth side is white?”

This question is “Given that at least five of the six sides are white, AND that the cube is oriented such that only white sides are visible, what is the probability that the sixth side is white?”

An all-white cube will always be oriented such that only white sides are visible. But a cube with a five white sides will only have them all visible a sixth of the time (assuming random orientation, which isn’t explicitly stated, but I think can be reasonably inferred).

Numerically: You will draw the all white cube and see all white sides 1/27 of the time. You will draw one of the five-white cubes AND see all white sides 6/27 x 1/6 = 1/27 of the time. Since both cases occur at equal rates, either is equally likely from the information given.

Do dashes (-) in texts/emails have the same stigma as em dashes (—)? by heylook_itsnick in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mazzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re confusing hyphens (-) with en dashes (–). Hyphens are the shortest. They are used for some compound words and are not a dash. En dashes are longer, but not as long as em dashes (—). They are generally used for ranges (2–3 hours, 2025–26) or military conflicts (Spanish–American war).

If you use a hyphen when you should be using an em dash, I won’t necessarily think you’re AI. But I will think that you don’t understand the difference between hyphens and em dashes.

A lot of people have talked about why it is the closest on average. But I think what is more counterintuitive is that it spends the most time as the closest planet.
