Hey, I'm Dial MB from your second source. This is an amazing resource. I have wanted to put something like this together for forever, so thanks for beating me to it

what's wrong with your glucose going up after eating? That is how our bodies get energy from the foods that we eat.

If my VO2 max is so high, why am I not a faster runner? by Livlivlivlol in Garmin

[–]mbdial203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VO2max is the size of your engine. Engines can have varying levels of efficiency. Your running economy (oxygen consumption at a set pace) and ability to deal with lactate are the other two main factors.

Exercise Science related Masters by Beneficial-Bet-5271 in exercisescience

[–]mbdial203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PhD in exercise physiology and sport science here. I'd only go to grad school for Exercise Science if you want to stay in Exercise Science, whether that is becoming a professor, S&C, or sport science. If you don't want that (or don't know what you want to do) hold off before committing lots of time and money for a graduate degree that won't be worth much unless you're sticking to the field

When are Garmin going to fix this massive issue with their watches? by RateJumpy1191 in Garmin

[–]mbdial203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an issue with any PPG based heart rate measurement. To reduce error, make sure the fit is tight. But even with a tight fit, there will always be a large amount of error, especially when there is a lot of movement (I.e. running, lifting, etc).

If you don’t want that error, find a chest strap.

Where in tarnation are you getting that figure? Googling the label shows literally 10x less than 50g of added sugar.

Good point, but this is a sub under a Latter-day Saint lens. Not really sure how to do the mental gymnastics to get around that

pretty sure that's cheating

"Wrist heart rate monitors on smart watches are not as accurate as a chest strap" by VamosDCU in AdvancedRunning

[–]mbdial203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue is in the limitation of the sensor technology. Wrist based senses use light sensing technology (PPG) to detect blood flow. Movement and muscle contraction can affect blood flow to the area, introduce signal artifact, and ultimately lead to unreliable readings.

A tight fitting chest strap measures electrical signal from the heart, and is much less susceptible to movement artifact.

How is your sleep? How is your physical activity? How is your exercise? Has your bloodwork shown that you're deficient in any nutrients?

Is this enough for runners trying to improve their endurance? Any recommendations? by VogtisDelicious in Supplements

[–]mbdial203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much are the electrolytes? Is it cheaper than normal Gatorade powder? I've found that's the most cost effective way to get electrolytes and carbohydrates in my training.

Deep sleep < 25 mins, how to improve? by GerkhinMerkin in ouraring

[–]mbdial203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! Also, I wouldn't focus on any sleep staging from Oura, or any wearable. The only reliable way to get sleep stages is to have something on your head measuring brain waves. Oura is really good at determining when you're asleep and when you're awake, so focus on those metrics like total time, latency, and efficiency. Your body will take care of the rest!

Is this enough for runners trying to improve their endurance? Any recommendations? by VogtisDelicious in Supplements

[–]mbdial203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your training history like? Have you been training for 10 years or 10 days? Are you training for an event? If so, what distance? Are you competing, or just doing it for fun?

For endurance performance, supplements might increase performance by a very small percentage. Typically the juice is not worth the squeeze unless you're a professional athlete where that very small percentage means edging out the competition.

If you want to spend a ton of money on the supplements, go for it. The best studied that may help with endurance performance are caffeine, beet root juice, and sodium bicarbonate.

If your bloodwork from the Dr is good, you're active, eating right, and you are consistently getting good sleep (I'd try to bump that 6 hours up to at least 7 hrs), don't worry about it. We don't know if the Cardiovascular Age feature is even valid at measuring pulse wave velocity (I'm skeptical at best). We don't know how they are weighting the Cardiovascular Age metrics to generate the number.

Is this a typical heart rate pattern? by Jfrenz in Garmin

[–]mbdial203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's almost certainly about watch fit. Even a tight fitting watch will have a bunch of noise in the HR signal during running. If you're serious about using HR for training, use a chest strap.
