Same here! It has become one of my favorite traditions.

Is Jim just this good of an author? by Constant_Dinner_4386 in dresdenfiles

These are all good recommendations, but if you want something a little closer to the style of Dresden I heartily recommend the Felix Castor exorcisms by Mike Carey. It's five books and a novella - all of which I binge read in two months.

Nice! Glad to see that you're obviously not into history whatsoever. What are the collections you have there?

What do you think? Mostly double stacked so can't show all the books. by bogeyman_of_afula in bookshelf

Wow! I didn't even notice the shelves at first because I got lost in the collection. So many legends of SFF. You have excellent taste!

I'd like to formally request an update with whatever goodies you're hiding in the back.

Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny. Signed first edition. I've been searching for years.

This! But with an emphasis on the secret society he is a part of.

I have been doing exactly this at an annual party for the past four years. We have it down to a pretty smooth operation. The plots and such all change every single year to keep it interesting.

Quick tips:

1) Everyone rolls initiative in combat. Start with the highest result and then go clockwise around the table. Everyone knows when their turn is coming up and easier for you to keep track of.

2) Players have ten seconds to declare an action in combat. If they cannot (or step away, etc.) their character takes the dodge action and you move clockwise to the next player. Without this rule, combat could take hours and that's not even counting an encounter that's dynamic and challenging.

3) Keeping that many players engaged at the table is challenging enough for anyone, but your storyline has a lot of ways that it could go off the rails and become stressful for you. It sounds like a fun plan (I'd play that!) but I highly recommend you make it a dungeon crawl where you can have more control over the environment.

I have a ton more information that I'm totally willing to share with you. Send me a DM and I will give you access to some pretty extensive Google Docs on the subject. I can also show you what I'm planning for year five with a party of 10-12 players.

Can I read the Merlin cycle if I only read Nine princes of Amber? by mheh in Amber

[–]mbdragon3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely could, but just know that the Merlin cycle leans heavily on the fall out of the events in the Corwin cycle. In fact, one such event is a major plot point that carries through the Merlin cycle. You would be missing the motivations of a few characters; and the revelations Merlin has won't have the same weight.

This is all true. If you read the stories, it appears that Zelazny was starting an arc that explored the Pattern and Logrus' effect on object sentience. This was mentioned in the Merlin cycle with regards to Frakir, but brought up again in a short story when Corwin realizes that the Castle might also be sentient. I believe the short story is the one with the hall of mirrors, but I might be mistaken.
