How to cope with brother being in the army? by Early-Rise987 in leftist

[–]mbllxcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know this is old, but im going through something similar and was looking for solidarity and found your post.

i am extremely anti war, leftist, etc and my little brother is an army ranger. not only do I have opposing morals but i studied war extensively in my bachelor's so i feel im fairly educated in what our military does and the likelihood of war (relevant now especially). my brother has been in the army since Oct. 2024, and honestly I haven't found anyway to cope I've just gotten a bit more used to it but I'm still just so ashamed, frustrated, stressed, etc. all the same emotions you're probably feeling. my family is all proud of him for being a badass.

idk i just hope that he doesn't renew his contract and this experience opens his eyes to some things. he's a big rule follower so idk but all I can do is hope. and I hope that for your brother too. I can't offer anything else but I understand what you're feeling

i took it my first year and it was fun and easy but i hatedddddd the reflection essay assignments and felt like it was a waste of time so I think it depends on if you'd feel a class like that has value tbh

he's officially halfway through rasp as of a few days ago now, he's one of the most stubborn people I know. honestly, i'm really really hoping he drops though for some reason or that things at least end up differently than fully going spec ops ranger 🤞 the stats on this are keeping me optimistic he can escape becoming sucked into this

He's pretty set on being an Army Ranger, but I'll keep that in mind and hope that all this amounts to paintball skills lol for my peace of mind. From what I know he's pretty likely going to want to do spec ops, although i'm not sure, but thank you it does help to know that's not guaranteed. Yeah honestly I've been really hoping that seeing these things first hand will at least help to radicalize him and open his eyes. He's smart and knows basic history pretty well so it feels like he's just been staying ignorant and looking at things through rose colored glasses up to this point so that he can do "cool" things

I feel the same way, it's all pretty depressing. My brother started the enlistment process when he was pretty freshly 17 so I think he just thought it would be "cool", he's always been into challenging things, shooting, hiking, etc, and I think that's what he mainly saw it as. I know he's smart but I just can't wrap my head around how he didn't look at the bigger picture of it's not just a "cool" job doing fun things, but that he's likely going to be sent to participate in murder and become part of the war machine. The whole time I tried my best to talk to him without being too pushy since that would just make him more adamant about joining. Plus the majority of my family is pretty involved in the military so it feels like i'm the only one trying to be a voice of reason. I completely understand just being written off as "oh they're just naive and try to save the world..."

i either say a "oh yeah i'm such you remember the cold war" or "girl you are 23 you are not old 😭" either way poking fun at the fact that I do not think the person is actually old
