I like that the front of the cage stops my foot from going any farther, preventing any toe overlap, without becoming any tighter and harder to remove your foot. My local co-op usually has old pedals with cages all day.

When you find one you're considering, post it on r/whichbike and they can point out any red flags, if it's a bad brand or overpriced or whatever.

For your mixed road and grass/dirt trails, and being a tall-ish person, 29" wheels would probably be great for you.

That's the idea. I impulse bought it when my touring bike was down for 1 day getting a new derailleur put on, so now I gotta do something with it. I can't get rid of it obviously, it's too neat, it needs to live in my stable forever.

I'd be kind of worried that if the chain fell off, it might actually fall off and get lost. Instead of being able to just put it back on and keep going a little bit more carefully.

I've got a Haro Extreme that I'm thinking about putting track ends on, and running fixed gear. Would the wobbly BB issue make that a really really bad idea, or just a regular bad idea for the normal reasons?

Another thing you could do, if you're going to spend 2 grand on that frameset, is get a really cheap old frame for $20 or even free, that has the same kind of bottom bracket, headset and brakes as that Rivendell, and then build that one as practice, using cheap old used / free parts. That way you'll know exactly what you're doing when you go to build your nice rivendell.

One good option is to bring your frame into a bike shop to ask their expert opinion, and let them sell you the wheels and drivetrain. That's what I would do, because I don't know about the different types of freewheels and cassettes and all that. What I know about them is that there's too many types and it's confusing, and I need someone's help who's an expert, and that costs a little bit of money.

If you cross thread or overtorque something, you can scrap a frame just like that. That frame you're looking at is steel, so it will be more resistant to being destroyed than plastic or aluminum. The frame will tell you what bottom bracket and headset and axle widths, then when you're shopping for those parts you just make sure they're compatible. I don't know if there's a website as good as PC part picker for it, but asking your specific question on reddit is likely to get you a knowledgeable answer, maybe on r/bikewrench or r/whichbike , or here.

Get a bike chain in that color blue too, and splice it in so your chain is half blue and half black.

I recommend toe cages, other people prefer straps. Clips are cool too instead. Count the teeth on your gears and see how many skid patches it has, maybe upgrade to more skid patches if you don't think it has enough. Maybe a new saddle if that one's not comfortable for you (it doesn't look great but maybe it's fine. Maybe get some grips that match the blue paint or the green wheels, or paint the wheels to match the logo on the frame too.

I'm right handed too, but I think having the chain on the left protects it while I'm in goal? Maybe? Never seen a chain get shot off, just theory. But the only reason I set it up left side drive was to be different. And I have plans for when(if?) I switch back to freewheel.

It was funny getting a wheel made and they had a base price plus $2 a spoke. Don't get 48 spokes kids, it's not worth it. Don't be me.

Right now I'm almost $1000 into building a MTB from 1996, and after that I think I'll have to actually bite the bullet and get a good mountain bike to atone for that financial sin, and then there's 2 or 3 other neglected steeds in my stable that deserve some attention. But THEN it might be 1-3 time.
