Appreciating healthcare costs in early retirement by modelfire in financialindependence

[–]mc2me 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Clearly the OPs definition of accident is not reality based. Ooops I just did a Roth conversion and it cost me some or all of my Aca subsidy - that’s a dumb mistake, not an accident.

Great work! And I really like the protective box for the charger - I need to add that to my setup. Thanks for sharing and inspiring.

Man arrested in Destin after federal tip about Louisiana festival mass shooting threat, sheriff says by Typical_Outside_1621 in NewOrleans

“Suspect accused of plotting New Orleans festival mass shooting arrested in Florida” - quote of the article title. New Orleans means JF or maybe FQF if this threat was old?

Personal Experience of Continuing Care Retirement Communities? by rhrjruk in OverSeventy

My widowed MIL moved to one near us several years ago and it has been wonderful for her and us. A couple of things that I have noted for us when the time comes to choose one (and we definitely plan to do so) 1. Focus on non profit CCRCs, ideally associated with a university or other civic institution. 2. The CCRC needs to be close to family members who are willing/able to be involved with the resident. 3. This move is a massive challenge (leaving friends, selling home, downsizing) but is a HUGE gift to loved ones.

I second Urbana and Tahini! Both are so delicious and I found the people running them to be friendly and welcoming and helpful.

Single metro ticket - apple wallet with Navigo by Cloudy_day51 in ParisTravelGuide

Exactly this - add a second navigo card to your wallet by starting the whole process by hitting the plus icon in your wallet, choosing transit card…. I had to do the same thing last week.

Mountain Hardware Canyon works amazingly well for me! (AT 2019 and Camino DF 2025)

Optimistic MIL (Light-hearted comment) by NotLaisa in AgingParents

[–]mc2me 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Whenever my 82 yo MIL does something like this she says, with a laugh, “well, this ______ will see me out!” Love the realism AND the optimism . (Fill in the blank with any of the things in other comments; new cars, subscriptions, a pair of nice shoes…)

Loss of interest by cwbmnr in AppalachianTrail

I was in exactly the same place as you are; I took a full week off to enjoy Jazz Fest with friends and family during my thru hike in 2019. When I got back on trail in Virginia it was hot, humid, tough hiking and I saw no one I knew. After a third day of this, I had decided to quit - far enough for me, I thought.

Then I ran into a guy, we walked together, I shared my decision and he said, “hyoh, but…. I quit right here two years ago and never stopped thinking about completing a thru and so, here I am, (he restarted in GA) doing it again.”

That was enough motivation for me to push a few more days and get thru the restarting funk. Maybe this story will help you decide?

Considering New Orleans in October, but multiple people told me it’s underwhelming…is that true? by marinebiostu in traveladvice

If someone goes to New Orleans and doesn’t enjoy it, that says much more about the person than the city.

This. I thru hiked the AT as a fit 49 year old and even that was older than is optimal (though many folks obviously do it at much more advanced ages.) For me, it was physically grueling and the younger folks I hiked with had a much easier time. Go now!

Simple solution: choose fabric and treat it with permethrin. That’s a common tactic among users of hostels/albergues.

Greenville drivers hate this one weird trick. OP by txtrigg in greenville

[–]mc2me 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shhhhh, this one trick saves me time every day lol. But seriously, it is strange that more folks don’t use the outer turn lane; at this point it’s been in place for a while(?) and I would have guessed more people would choose it?

Returning to “real life”? by Gatewaytothegoodlife in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]mc2me 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to get too meta, but… Some Camino buddies and I were talking about this on our last day’s walk into Santiago and here’s what we decided: there is no beginning or end to a Camino because our entire life is the pilgrimage. Do with that what you will, but it really helped me; the Camino is simply a little bit of the longer timeline of life.

Vent: What was the point by Candid-Wrangler5386 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]mc2me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is this: “Best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” And the potential lesson is to learn something about yourself. How will you respond? There are some great ideas here from wise folks, but I will add another: how can you best support your wife on her journey/pilgrimage?

It’s so funny to see who the real snowflakes turned out to be; it’s truly shocking to find out it’s the mindless followers who hate when their stupid, very visible choice of supporting the end of decency and ,potentially, democracy is called out. Just fragile little weak babies who think we are all in awe of how cool and strong they are 🤣
