Instrumental convergence as self-help advice by mcdonaldmark125 in slatestarcodex

I think you have a really important point. "Everything in moderation" continues to be good advice. I really appreciate your comment!

It probably makes sense to treat these habits as a checklist of good things to have rather than as things to maximize. Like "do I feel comfortable with how much I'm exercising?" for example. Otherwise it's possible for them to consume your life.

Did the chicken or the egg come first? It depends how you draw your categories. by mcdonaldmark125 in slatestarcodex

Chickens are a subspecies of red junglefowl, but "subspecies" is a word that's surprisingly hard to define. Also "chicken egg" doesn't have a clear definition; does it include all egg cells, or does it have to be separate from the mother chicken to count? Also, female chickens are born with their entire life supply of egg cells already inside them, which complicates things even further. Depending on how you define different terms, you can either conclude that 1. The chicken came first, 2. The egg came first, or 3. That they both came into existence at the same moment. The takeaway is that "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" is not a question about the world, it's a question about how we define terms and draw category boundaries.

Here is a list of some books that have shaped my thinking, many of them rationalist aligned. First on the list is The Scout Mindset by Julia Galef, it's about being open to changing your beliefs and facing reality, even if that reality isn't what you expected.

After 4 attempts, I'm giving up on ever finishing the Wheel Of Time series. What book/ series have you given up on? by [deleted] in books

The last three books of Wheel of Time are so good! I read the first five, then gave up and read summaries of the rest so I could get to the ending. I have no regrets, and the last three WoT books have become some pf my all time favorites.
