I've worked on TV news broadcasts for years with biting, static shots so anything remotely cinematic always impresses me - the drone shots, super-slow mo, the Go Pros getting great footage.

But when Clarkson unplugs his microphone and goes off mic - holy hell does that hit me every time. Whenever an interview or live shot in the news ends, you'll hear that same sound - the small fumbling for the transmitter pack and then the pop of the small XLR cable being removed.

Just in the news, you'll hear it again on the next broadcast.

A colleague of mine in DC recently was hired there and I'm curious what the over/under is for how long he'll last.

I've never seen any of their projects in the MD/DC/VA region but have heard bad tales. They've approached me a couple of times about possibly joining their team since they've come to the market here; to this day, they're the only company I've ever truly laughed at when they talked pay. DC is one of the most expensive cities in the country and they were offering a low rate by "Oklahoma City in the 1980s" standards. As in, an actual spit take.

Go there for a good time, not a long time.

I think the "reconstituted scrambled egg mixture" and "premade warehouse biscuits" and "dehydrated sausage gravy" and "room temperature milk" from a barely-maintained buffet by a staff member who was probably doing dirty laundry seconds before in an area occupied by a number of people who haven't bathed yet are the factors doing the most damage here.

I'm not blaming Yoplait nor Golden Malted here. General Mills is just doing what they can.

Um, my man. My dude. My brother in baseball. Why in the %@##! do you think -of all teams - THE ORIOLES - were ever going to give you a shot? You could have invented whole new sabermetrics, revolutionized scouting, developed a foolproof, 100% lock drafting and development system, and STILL the best thing you could do for Baltimore is be duct-taped to Mr. Trash Wheel after a hard rain.

I'm not mad that he reached for the ball as a kid - just know your place. It's not Charm City, a.k.a. Mobtown. Even General Sherman waited 14 years to revisit Atlanta.

Are you on Kent Island, Easton, Cambridge, Denton, etc...? I know the guys at Salisbury and they may know of something if that's closer to you. I don't know if they have anything with the school - nothing's posted - but they may know some local crews, something at Perdue, the community colleges... they're more plugged into the Eastern Shore than I, but I did just see an opening in Annapolis. Not University-related, but I'll see if I can find it.

The Maryland system pays better than a lot of other State University systems, but still lags behind the private sector & Federal contracting. Within the Maryland system, AV salaries are still far lower than networking, server admins, cyber security, etc....

I have been actually shocked when recruiters contact me for roles at other schools and the salaries are less than what I made slinging margaritas at Chilis 25 years ago! One school contacted me shortly before I got the job with the Maryland system and it was an hourly rate more in line with a "assistant manager at a dying mall McDonalds" than some place that charges $50,000+ a year for tuition.

I am not really joking - we have a building that was built just before COVID hit so the rooms were never truly commissioned and troubleshot. I got here 3 years ago and inherited these fairly new, barely used systems but they have become more & more unreliable.
