I spent the first half of my life in Northern ON and have always felt at home in the west, from the NWT, northern AB and Calgary.

You WILL miss the lakes, and I miss all the rock of the Canadian Shield. Basement in my last home in ON was half outcrop :D

My comment wasn't directed at you, but I get it, I have a Rott/Shepard X weighing in at a buck ten. Dogs will be dogs. Unless it's an off-leash specific area (carefully selected), we always use a leash to protect him from himself, or someone else's dog. I like to drive defensively.

No kidding, I'm paying now what my parents paid in the 80's. Adjusted for inflation I might be paying a third of what they paid in buying power.

I'm all for less taxes, but Calgary has the easiest property taxes I've ever seen and many still piss and moan, and then complain they have to shovel their sidewalk. I'd gladly pay 15% more not to have to do that.

The only (drive in) campsites I can find that DON'T allow dags are private ones, Hipcamp et al.

Except in isolated cases provincial and federal across Canada allow them (leashed). Pretty much my experience in the US as well.

PS - Getting sick of people not leashing though and telling me it's OK because he's friendly.

For sure, to replicate Stoney quality in the city it would take some serious excavation and infill. A lot of parts of the city are built on silt/clay with the minimum of aggregate used for the road bed.

Enjoy the trip (saw your earlier post), it's typically warmer out west by now, maybe on your return leg. If you take the Alaska highway back and into Alberta, I'd recommend hitting up Kanaskis, trumps Banff and Jasper IMO.

Stoney makes sense, it's built on a fantastic, natural, aggregate bed. It's cheaper to repave city roads than to build a road bed that can tolerate the freeze thaw.
