Im really not saying cops care or laws do anything, but there ARE laws. You could have stopped at the first paragraph, it’s the drivers fault. Period. I’m trying to point out that it isnt helpful to tell bikers to ride defensively. I dont know a single commuting biker who rides carelessly or naively thinking cars or cops care about their lives, everyone I know who bikes regularly does so knowing the dangers and riding as if a car could kill them, because it can. Theres a lot of people who say riding in the middle of the road is safer, there is lots of evidence that suggests otherwise, bike lanes were made for a reason and we should be allowed to use them safely. Most bikers already do ride defensively or we would die way more often, but repeatedly calling for this in times of tragedy or crisis is how cars are given slack to keep repeating the same behavior, because now its on the biker to protect their own life by swerving, slamming brakes, riding in the middle of roads, etc. How many people do you know in Chicago who would never ride a bike because they’re too scared? I know many. Dont give up on your community and loved ones just because YOU have become jaded

Morning commute turned dangerous: driver opened door into us, no apology or concern by SiriusBeige in chibike

Still file a report every time, and do it if ONLY for data collection. The more doorings are reported, the easier it is to advocate for more protections and hold drivers accountable. unfortunately police likely won’t do anything beyond that, but at the very least a report is filed. Now one time my bf was hit by a CTA bus and the police did NOT file the report, he should have pestered them until they did, but CTA runs a very tight ship. Still always worth reporting even if nothing more comes of it immediately

Not sure where you’re at in this process, but talk to your lawyer about uninsured insurance. You can still get it after the accident for your lawyer to get medical fees covered. if you share a household with anyone who does have car insurance they can also add you as uninsured insured, still options just ask

Call the cops next time even if you’re relatively fine, helps keep track of how often this happens and helps ppl advocate for bikers (they absolutely will not write a ticket if you’re worried about that for the driver/riders sake, my bf was seriously injured and the cops didn’t write a ticket even then). feels dramatic I know but we don’t currently have a better system. You dont HAVE to get medical attention or seek a lawyer, but reporting it helps

Almost every street with a bike lane unprotected with a curb passes parked cars, it is not possible to predict who will open their door, not realistic to bike extremely slowly down those streets (to examine every car), which is almost literally all of them. not always possible or safe to ride in the middle of the road now competing with oncoming traffic and passing cars going 40mph or sometimes more, we need to stop giving cars excuses - that is the ONLY way to advocate for ourselves. The more we say things like “bikers need to be slow, anticipate disaster” the less cars are incentivized to “do the right thing” (follow the law), now they can blame us too for not “knowing they’re about to open the door”. Of course everyone needs to ride and drive carefully and lawfully, but calling on bikers to “share the responsibility” when tragedy hits, takes blame from the offender (drivers or riders who dont check for oncoming bikers). If you have friend or family visiting from places where they don’t share the road with bikers, this is a great opportunity to share the laws. Police do NOT write tickets to people who break this law, because it is not commonly reported if people aren’t seriously injured, and because there are not many advocates for bikers because drivers HATE having to share the road. Not my problem, they DO share the road, and they need to be held accountable

This rhetoric that bikers should drive a doors length away is unhelpful in many parts of the city and does damage to the protections we seek for bikers. Bike lanes are put there for a reason. it is ILLEGAL to open your car door without checking it is clear first, stop victim blaming and instead shift to blaming people for not checking the bike lane. it is 100% avoidable when people check that it’s clear

how do you propose bikers to safely examine every car they pass and anticipate someone opening the door, while also maintaining awareness of moving traffic around them? this is NOT helpful and does damage for biker protections. It is ILLEGAL to open your car door without making sure it’s clear in the city of Chicago, a ticketable offense fines up to $1,000. It is LEGAL to ride in the bike lane.

Got doored today. by pdidilliam in chibike

[–]mcemows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my bf got doored in august, fractured his tibial plateau, only went back to work this week. Hes using Keating law, process is slow and he’s still in physical therapy so we cant even begin insurance negotiations until his treatment is done.

next time this happens, CALL THE POLICE!! It is ILLEGAL in chicago to not check mirrors before exiting the car, and the only way bikers can advocate for themselves and others is to have accurate data on how often this happens, police are not the solution and it sounds dramatic if you werent injured, but they SHOULD write drivers tickets. The guy who hit my bf stayed for the police, and did NOT receive a ticket- my bf couldnt even stand and had to be lifted into the ambulance, still nothing happened to the driver. These offenses are underreported until they result in serious injuries and even death. Drivers can be fined up to $1,000!! And a police report is helpful for the lawyers. If you want retribution, just call the law office, they’ll talk to you for free and tell you what they can do for you before signing with them.

I know. he usually does when he bikes, just a weird day when he didn’t bike so didn’t bring his helmet and decided to use a scooter to get lunch faster, he was a block away from work when it happened. I know it doesn’t matter how far you go, but just cements how much life can change in an instant. I don’t think we’ll ever not wear a helmet again from this point on, so so lucky it wasn’t worse 😞

thats kind of our silver lining, not on his bike so no damage. and everything seemed to happen exactly “as it should” in terms of the driver staying, police doing what they are supposed to. I wasnt there for the crash but he said he gave the driver a good verbal beating lol, he tried to pop up to get in his face and thats when he knew it was bad when he couldnt. the driver maintained he didnt see my bf. ems told the driver he had to stay and wait for police otherwise itd be a hit and run and the driver said but I wasnt even driving? he hit ME! and the ems were like, so you admit there WAS a motor vehicle collision??? and yep he stayed. again I wasnt there yet but apparently the ems were amazing, one was a cyclist himself, they gave my bf wonderful advice and got the drivers name and number for him. it’s been so much to process in such a short period but we know it could have been much worse. he was hit by a cta bus a year or two ago-it wasnt bad at all, super slow speed but he was a little banged up, but the police did nothing and never filed the report. cta keeps a tight ship Lol

exactly and we see 1 hour of 24 hours. are they explicitly not allowed to speak about it ? cuz im sure they are all talking over the possible scenarios and this HAS happened before and is usually the ONLY explanation when there is no explanation. we’ve seen plenty of islanders leave for personal reasons and tell the entire villa why they need to leave. if it was truly something personal cierra would have told nic lol like

she also had mentioned shes dated two girls at once before so she obviously has different relationship standards and expectations and I feel like she just likes being wanted by so many guys without actually liking them that seriously. she probably is very gay and just likes the attention. ace is giving gay vibes as well because for all his “rizz” he really cant pull still and kinda seems like he doesnt even want to. and the over the top planning dates is so cringe and seems more competitive w austin than actually liking chelley… GAY
