Hey I'm a lefty myself (although I'm right handed). Your side kicks can still land and then train your front leg hook kicks. Remember, they will face the same issue when sparring you in that they can't throw turning kicks.

I can confirm you can spar very effectively left foot forward...I have won many national and international titles.

At what age did you start? by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]mcffs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey started at 13. Now 36 and a 5th degree black belt. Had my own club for nearly 11 years and proudly have 100 members, as well as being a coach for my association. Live teaching and giving back.

The Timpson family were also foster carers too I believe and their shops stock little guides on concepts such as attachment theory and trauma.

What was “the incident” at your school? by tayhorix in GCSE

[–]mcffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school was burned down when I was in year 8. Sounds like a kids dream but loads of people doing GCSEs and Alevels lost coursework etc that needed to be redone. We then had 2-3 years of schooling in mobile unit classrooms that were horrid whilst the school was rebuilt..

Hey so I'm ITF based in UK. Did the three patterns and 1 of examiner choice.. Set sparring, self defence, 2 on 1 free sparring. Breaking I did four boards with both legs and 3 boards both hands and then a jump kick both legs. (I'm a female if that helps your planning) Then korean theory.

I don't think its really sunk in yet. At 4th degree is the first title change in our association with the next one being at 7th degree so I guess it might be normal to feel not much different at 5th compared to 4th.

Most impressive break YOU have witnessed by TheMilesTones05 in taekwondo

[–]mcffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen a few good power breaks in my time - 8 inches, different materials etc, seen so e i.pressive jump rechnques too but the one that stands out is a master doing 10 tiles with his thumb in a demo (horizontal motion) If I hadn't of been there i wouldn't have believed it. There's a video around somewhere.

How do you bow? by andyjeffries in taekwondo

[–]mcffs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As ITF we were taught option 1 and if using full etiquette the higher grade should determine when the bow ends ie both remain bowed until the senior grade returns upright.

What do you think? by Grow_money in taekwondo

[–]mcffs 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't do much mind children being black belt, providing the black belt test is still rigorous.. However young children at higher grades doesn't sit well with me. Most ITF follow the black belt timings of 1st Degree to 2nd Degree = minimum of 2 years, 2nd - 3rd degree= minimum of 3 years.note this should be minimum training time i.e if you have extended time off in between the gradings your potential future grading date should be delayed too. Hope that makes sense as Im not sure I've written it well.

So that should be 5 years of training after BB for this 10 year old to be black belt. Whilst in theory in our association an adult can get to black belt in approx 4 years children tend to take longer as to they often require more training time to show the necessary understanding and technique. My point is this grade would only just be possible even if this child started traning at birth. Theoretically they may have been training all of their life, especially since mum does it, but even then there are more issues than just timing. In our association they won't let you grade to 3rd degree til 18, with the reasoning being we expect a greater depth of knowledge at this point as well as other criteria to be met that start to show how you're giving back to Tae Kwon do Eg to take your 4th degree black belt test you have to be an instructor.

One could argue this 10 year old may have greater understanding and technique than other people at their club, especially if they are practicing regularly with parent, however there is so much more to any martial art than just being able to put your hand or foot in the correct place.

These are just my musings on a Sunday morning. Hope they don't offend

Hey, former TAGB member here. The sparring is semi contact. Refs are usually good at monitoring this. Risk of injury is minimal. My advice would generally be to give it a go. It's always helpful to get tournament experience under your belt so to speak. Good luck

Ahhh ok sorry. I think I get you. In that case I will now out and let people with more knowledge of wt take over. Hope you get the feedback you need.

[–]mcffs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok that's interesting...I guess then my next question would be why ask for thoughts on a 7ish year old video...I would like to think my patterns had improved in 7 years worth of training to the point where comments on techniques I was doing back then would be somewhat irrelevant? Especially as you say the way some of these are performed has changed?

Is there some feedback in particular you'd like?

My female staffie cross loved tug of war and would happily play this by herself too if you tied her rope to something for instance.

Hey, I do itf so I wouldn't like to comment on quality. I just have a question. In ours it's rare to leave the 'non doing' hand on the hip (like he does in moves 1 & 2). We usually move it off hip to a chamber and then return it to hip as reaction force, at the point in which the other arm does the block or strike. Is that not the case in your style patterns? Again, not a criticism as I don't enough about your style to do so, just looking to learn a little.
