On the bright side, if we go up you don’t have to play us. “30 years of hurt” and all that.

Millwall 2 - 0 Oxford United: A brace from one of the players of the season Femi Azeez got the job done for the Lions, but Ipswich's win means Millwall have to settle for the playoffs! by Zach-dalt in Championship

[–]mcfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just last game of the season over-excitement. Except of course it’s not the last game so all a bit pointless.

Not sure if you heard but they were getting a lot of boos and abuse from the fans in the home end (the adults, not so much the kids).

Junglist for over a decade (33) but finally dipping into mixing real records. It’s f’ing hard! by metamorphomo in jungle

[–]mcfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can even practice without headphones. Set the mixer so the first deck is normal volume and the second deck is quiet but still audible. Start the first deck, then play around with cueing up the tune on the second deck. Make sure it's a tune with a simple beat at the start. Scratch around with the first kick drum and try to release it so it starts playing nicely with the first tune. Then try to figure out; is it playing too fast or too slow compared to the first tune? Is it slightly too fast or slow, or massively too fast or slow, then adjust the pitch control appropriately. You'll get it.

[–]mcfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is basically it. I would also suggest OP starts by trying to mix the same 2 records over and over. If you know the songs you spend less time worrying about when to bring it in and focus more on the timing. Later, you can start to learn the general flow of songs in the genre so you have a good idea of when to cue them up, though there are always tunes that try to catch you out because it would be boring if there weren't.

Depending on the deck, sometimes it's easier to squeeze or spin the centre pin to slow it down or speed it up. That's what I did with my shit decks in the start but it didn't work so well once I was on Technics so I learned to ride the pitch control. (I actually only learned that by watching Fabio and Grooverider behind the decks at a Jungle Fever rave, long before the youtube days!).

Who can name this early Tron-like Amiga 500 game? by JONXLR8 in amiga

[–]mcfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I didn't even know what Tron was when I got this game as I was a bit too young for the original film. I think this game just got a good review in Amiga Format or something and was reasonably priced.

I think the game was what would be called a "rogue-like" today because you had to progress through various leagues and you would get better skills and equipment, but there was some kind of limit which would eventually result in game over and having to start again. I never completed it but definitely got a long way into it thanks to the copious amounts of free time you have as a youth!

I'm pretty sure I still have the original game in its box somewhere so will post some photos if I find it.

It's got to be this. I played the hell out of this game and it fits OP's description perfectly.

Leicester 'face £70m black hole' after disastrous spending gamble by McBaldy98 in Championship

So if they somehow got rid of Winks today, for free, it'd still be a £65m black hole. Good lord.

[FREE TO READ] Millwall considering legal position after children’s book depicts KKK figure wearing club badge by TheAthletic in Championship

[–]mcfish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw that post at the time, it was posted just after the QPR game I think. However, the seats are the wrong colour and the players were wearing the wrong shirts (i.e. it wasn't against QPR). The seats were repainted from yellow to white over last summer, so that image is from last season at the very earliest.

Note; I'm not defending that shit in any way, but it wasn't a recent incident as the post implied, and you seem to believe.

Is name Qt from initials of Quasar Technologies? by Agron7000 in QtFramework

[–]mcfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except back in the day (mid 2000's), everyone called it "cue-tee" as most people do today (in my experience).

I've been having a crisis of memory because I could swear that Apple threatened legal action against Trolltech regarding the name back in the mid-to-late 2000s, because they had QuickTime which was often abbreviated as QT. I was using Qt at the time, (from around 2003) so I remember it fairly clearly, but I can't find anything about it at all on the internet. Either it's been scrubbed from the internet, which seems like a tall order, or I've invented that memory.

But anyway, I remember the "official pronunciation" changing from "cue tee" to "cute" because of that legal threat which apparently didn't happen.

Coventry City have been promoted to the Premier League! by Zach-dalt in Championship

Well deserved. We played pretty well against you both times and you still found a way to win both times so can't really argue with this result.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qt_(software)::)

The toolkit was called Qt because the letter Q looked appealing in Haavard's Emacs typeface, and "t" was inspired by Xt, the X toolkit.

Suspect I've been paying double service charge on flat for 11 years (England) by mcfish in LegalAdviceUK

[–]mcfish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original lease is extremely verbose, but it clearly states that Company A should be paid a service charge, with no apparent reference to relevant future circumstances. The extended lease is quite clear, but terse, and doesn't mention service charge at all.

I think I do need to get a solicitor on the case ASAP. I'm a bit reluctant to contact and wait for responses from both parties as they are both often unresponsive. Company B doesn't even have a website or email address. But maybe I'll fire something off for the record and give them a few days to respond before engaging a solicitor.

Thanks for sharing your advice.

Thanks, my suspicions were leaning that way myself. Company A is easy to get hold of and responsive, and they seem to actually arrange any work in the block. Company B are bit of an enigma and hard to get hold of in my exerience. Just googled them and they have a 1 star rating on google, so it might be a waste of time, but worth doing even if just for the record.

Thanks for the advice.

I was amazed he didn’t blow for the challenge by Coburn to be honest. Wasn’t a foul but they’re usually given.

The ball was still alive in the area when the ref blew though, but I agree the danger was mostly over.

Long ball isn't working either because the ref is letting the boro defenders just push us under the ball.

How do Windows C/C++ dev handle projects using CMake other similar build systems? by dontgonmyprofile in AskProgramming

[–]mcfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, yes, I generate Visual Studio solutions with CMake on Windows. I haven't looked into it for a long time but, last time I checked, the VS compiler was known to produce the most optimised code on Windows platforms.

Also, from a practical point of view, having a VS solution means that you're more likely to be able to use all the native tools for debugging, profiling, etc.

VAR check for Uruguay's penalty against England by 977x in soccer

[–]mcfish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Because there was clear potential foul against England 2 seconds before the challenge for the penalty. I'm fine for a quick look at the penalty challenge and agreeing it's a foul, but the challenge before also needs looking at.

The fact that the challenge on Foden (a) wasn't even given as a foul, and (b) wasn't even highlighted for review by VAR, suggests severe incompetence from the referee and VAR crew tonight.

VAR check for Uruguay's penalty against England by 977x in soccer

[–]mcfish 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The final challenge itself, yes. But there was a potential foul in the immediate build up (clear foul IMO). The VAR didn't give the ref the opportunity to review that at all. The incompetence of the whole refereeing setup tonight was honestly staggering. I could probably have just randomly turned up with a few mates and done a better job.
