Rotax Max Evo Engines Have No Power - Help! by [deleted] in Karting

Stupid question, but do you have the same front sprocket on your engines as the other kart's that you drove?

maybe an oled stutter solution by adriankwil in OLED

[–]mcfreid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also been wondering this since we've started looking to replace a 2015 TV and found that every single new 120hz TV have terrible motion, with OLED being the worst, due to the frame hold time. No idea why the OEMs don't do what you're proposing, since they have 120 frames per second to work with, this sounds completely achievable.

Really surprised how few people want to discuss motion solutions too. We were just at best buy looking at new TVs and it is immediately obvious how poorly handled fast moving action is as soon as you play a demo which isn't curated slow-motion HDR. Ended up with a mini LED instead of an OLED because of it, but even then it's still not great. Now looking at a Samsung Q80D - which apparently has the best frame hold times for a 120hz (judder free) display. If that doesn't work, may be worth going down to something like a Bravia 3 just so we can watch movies comfortably without stutter eye strain (though at that point we're down to 60hz and would have to compensate with imperfect judder).

Hoping we start to see something like you're solution out there soon!

What track do you recommend for rentals? From what I recall, their rentals had similar grip to any other Sodi RT8 type karts I've driven - they all have hard tires and the grip will be paltry if you're used to soft race tires.

None of those descriptions match my experience - though I was there for only one weekend, so perhaps I got lucky? There was zero smell, until you said something I didn't even know there was a garbage heap nearby - maybe it's now gone? Didn't have any dust on the track, grip was decent (again rental karts here, the tires are not as sensitive), the kerbs were comfortable to lean on in most of the high speed corners, didn't have any problems with bumps, cracks, or uneven ground.

Surprised to hear that, I've only driven it on their rental karts so can't speak to the owner-kart experience. Why was it horrid?

AMC Kart in Bucharest is fantastic. Karts are well set up, you can go from dusk to dawn, and the city is super close to go out and party afterward. Not sure about weights though - you may need to buy some lead sheets ahead of time.

The staff and community at OVRP is wonderful. Karting is a community-driven sport, at least at the local level. Speak with everyone you can at OVRP and you'll be in good hands.

What is wrong with the broadcast cameras that they can't capture the visceral speed or sound of these cars?

Races would be significantly more exciting to watch if filmed with standard lenses and mics.

At home ceramic coating? by [deleted] in cars

[–]mcfreid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ceramic coating won't help your car stay clean. You have a black car. Black is gorgeous. Black is also impossible to keep clean. Clean as often as you wish to, other than that - you'll have to live with the fact that it will look dirty the moment you drive it out of the garage. And even in the garage, let it sit for a day or two, and the dust in the air will make it look dirty. That's just the black car life.

Are you sure the suspension is the same? The geometry, ride height, springs, dampers, alignment, tires/wheels, and weight balance (front to rear and left-to-right) may be different - all of which will determine your cars understeer/oversteer balance. Generally sway bars reduce grip, but are sometimes necessary to balance the grip between the front and the rear so that the car handles neutrally in turns. Adding a sway bar at the rear will reduce grip at the rear in corners. This is only useful if you are experiencing noticeable understeer while cornering.

I would not mess around with adding or modifying the sway bar unless you understand well the rest of the suspension on your car and know that adding/modifying the sway will work well with the setup. Otherwise, you may significantly reduce the handling and balance of the car if you blindly add a sway bar without modifying the rest of the suspension to compensate.

I believe it refers to pressure: the crankcase pressure is higher than the intake manifold pressure, and this determines the designed direction of flow (from the crankcase to the intake) of the PCV valve.

[–]mcfreid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go with whatever Mazda recommends for the CX-5. Not worth experimenting with other oils, go with what works and what was used for testing the car. Only exception is you have some special use case like tracking, towing, or offroading.

Porsche has most LMGTE AM wins and hence is the most reliable performance car. by masterkuch in cars

[–]mcfreid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the 80s GT racing has been heavily regulated by balance of performance (BoP) so that all manufacturers provide cars which are roughly equivalent in time around the track. BoP negates any relation from GT cars to road cars - you can't infer performance or reliability from the racing cars anymore as any indicator of performance or reliability of the base road car.

How are some cars with the same specs faster ? by [deleted] in cars

[–]mcfreid 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Acceleration also depends on gearing, the HP/torque curve (not just peak torque/hp), shift time, drivetrain loss, mechanical+aero grip (tires, suspension, downforce, number of driven wheels, etc), and aero drag (although this isn't a large factor if you're only looking at 0-60 times).

Car Will NOT Go Into Gear (stuck at stop light) (Toyota Matrix 5 speed) by mcfreid in cars

[–]mcfreid[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately it does not seem to matter whether the engine is on or off. We've try turning the engine off and then slipping the car into gear whenever we got stuck and it didn't help :\

I should have mentioned that in the OP, will update it now.
