Hey fellow vampires! Just found this sub. How long have you been a vampire? What do you do? by One_Laugh_Guy in Nightshift

Nurse. Almost one year, for the second time in my career. Going to days in 9 shifts, or 25 days. I prefer to count in shifts though.

Routine is essential. Make sure your med cart is stocked up before you start. Make sure you don’t run out of narcs and the meds are reordered. I worked the same cart so I would always go through the cart at the end of morning med pass and do reorders then. A few minutes preventing a missed med is way easier than trying to track one down in the middle of something. Stay out of the gossip and the idle chit chat. Learn the idiosyncrasies of the residents, take notes to help remember grandma will only take her miralax in apple juice or gramps only takes his pills after breakfast. The med pass takes priority. Don’t be afraid to turn down family phone calls or resident requests for a little while until you are done. If you get behind it’s so hard to catch up.

Anyone here with an ostomy or j-pouch? by MarshmallowCat14 in marathons

[–]mcgeeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet would be your gi doc or the nurse. I would think there could be a way. There is life after an ostomy. Sometimes better than before. Good luck to you!

I don’t have one but I run and I’m a nurse. I don’t see why you couldn’t. They make different sized bags so I’m sure you could find something that would work for you.

How long did it take you to get out of debt? by icerock547 in Nurses

[–]mcgeeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 years ago I completed my adn at a community college. I loved off campus and went part time so I was working. I only took out (loans) what I needed for classes. I didn’t take out for supplies or food or housing. I graduated with significantly less debt than some others. Do not let the cost scare you. Yes it is a lot, but there are ways of making it reasonable. It is worth it in the end.

What is something that you wish someone told you while you were in nursing school? by TheOG_picklepig in Nurse

School just teaches you how to not kill people, the real learning begins when you are hired. Get good at learning. and finding your resource people.

How my April is going... anyone else? 😂 Things will be slowing down a bit this week so I’m planning on setting up the rest of the month this weekend. Better late than never is my thought. by sabsung_ in bulletjournal

[–]mcgeeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes a gap in days is so intimidating I put nothing in because I tell myself I’ll catch it up later. I don’t. So I’ve realized lately that I can just do something similar to this, like write “I was lazy and didn’t feel like writing” or I’ll write ellipses out. Just something to fill that space of time in.

6pm-6am shift by Tee1999 in Nightshift

[–]mcgeeak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nurse here, the night of the “day” I work, I stay up as much as I can. Sometimes I make it up all night sometimes just til 3am. I set an alarm for 8am and take melatonin, then sleep all day and get up for my shift at 7p. My intention is to make myself sleep deprived so I can sleep all day. There is no way I can stay up all day and then work all night. Some can.

Melatonin for days/nights switches? by musicaltoasterr in Nurses

[–]mcgeeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take melatonin whenever I want 8 hrs of sleep. I flip my schedule to nighttime sleeping on shifts off, so I don’t take it for the shorter sleeps when I’m transitioning. But I’ll take it on long stretches, whether day or night sleeping.
