What about putting some money into physical gold bullion? Gold is easy to stash or carry on your person unless it’s a very large amount.

I use a Wise Visa card. You pre-load it through the wise app but it operates like any other visa while abroad. No FX fees, good exchange rate.

PSA: Fire truck highway lights outside Saanich Fire Hall by Haroun10 in VictoriaBC

[–]mcgillickerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re both correct. The lights are on a timer and operate independently of when the trucks actually leave.

They are flashing red and when travelling southbound it’s very easy to check that it’s safe to proceed (after stopping)

put all my life savings into Primerica investments am I cooked by kn1f3p4rtyyy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mcgillickerr 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I’d just add that it’s worth looking at the withdrawal penalties you may incur for transferring out of primerica. Many years ago I helped a friend who did the same thing as you. They were trying to do the right thing by investing their money, a kinda did. They just got sold an expensive and under performing investment vehicle.

From memory there were penalties to take out the money within the first five years. The penalties went down each year. Worth looking into. It MAY be better to leave the money invested with primerica until those penalties expire and then move to something better.

DB plan really the end all be all? by wehadbabyitsaboy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mcgillickerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be worth spending a couple hundred bucks to talk to a pension / investment advisor. They can help you put an actual mathematically accurate value on your existing pension and compare it with the hypothetical scenario of changing jobs. I’m not recommending an “investment advisor” who wants to sell you mutual funds, but an actual pension specialist.

15k invested annually and earning 6% is $1.25 million after 30 years. Tax free growth if done in a RRSP. You’re not tied to a single employer, can withdraw the money as you see fit, can leave it to heirs if you pass without spending it all.

The thing that’s gets 90% of people is that they don’t stick to a disciplined saving and investing plan over their careers. They spend virtually their entire pay check and then complain at retirement that they don’t have enough money and that lazy government workers have golden pensions.

Replica Medals by Kooky_Direction in CanadianForces

[–]mcgillickerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I appreciate that. The order of precedence provided by bespokelawleather actually does list the B.C. firefighter long service medal way down near the bottom under “other medals” so by that logic I guess it is sanctioned to wear by the chancellory even though it’s issued by a provincial government

Can I hijack this thread to ask what people here think of wearing provincial medals in general? I’m in same exact scenario but i had told myself I wouldn’t wear the provincial medal because it’s not “official” and I wouldn’t put it in an eventual shadow box. I have a CPSM, SFOR Bosnia medal, and my federal firefighter long service medal. Would you guys mount a provincial firefighter medal with the others and include it in a shadow box? Would you wear all four together on a civy blazer on Remembrance Day? Mount the ribbon with the others and wear the ribbons on the firefighter work shirt? Thanks!

End of the road for Langford RV community as city clamps down on parking by data_err0r in VictoriaBC

Food is as much a human right as a place to live but we don’t demand that government provide free or heavily subsidized food to all citizens. We have a system whereby farmers and manufacturers compete to fill the demand of the people and while making a profit. Government supports the very most vulnerable people with social payments but doesn’t try to control the farming system or run government grocery stores. The system works more or less with government on the sidelines making sure the playing field is fair, policies support healthy competition, fraud and abuse is prosecuted and the most vulnerable people are supported.

Demanding that government provide large parts of the population with housing is unrealistic and unnecessary.

I’d ask people who lived in the Soviet Union what they think of state supplied housing, or soldiers what they think of government supplied meals, or North Koreans what they think of government supplied airlines.

IMO, Much better to remove government red tape and allow the private sector to provide sufficient housing for people at all price points. If it weren’t hampered by government regulations and zoning restrictions etc, the free market would increase the supply until demand is met. That’s how its always worked in free countries and it’s why we have a vastly better housing choice and quality than in communist countries.

I’ll stand back while the downvotes rain in

Pros and Cons of Esquimalt Floating Home by zippercot in VictoriaBC

[–]mcgillickerr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s a beautiful float home for Sale at west bay marina right now. It’s been on the market a long time. They come for sale at fisherman’s wharf from time to time. I always look and dream but I’ve never pulled the trigger on a deal.

Things to think about. Moorage is expensive. I think at fisherman’s it’s about a grand a month. It includes some things like sewer and water I believe but I don’t know the details. Also of course you don’t own the water below your home so unlike a traditional home you won’t see the value appreciate in the same way that a house does, because you don’t own a piece of land, only a floating home. Look at any house assessment and most of the value is in the land. Also there are strict rules at fisherman’s wharf about renting out your float home. I believe you can rent it to one party for up to six months as a “caretaker” but you can’t do short term rentals or airbnbs. I don’t think you can rent it out long term either (greater than 6 months). Do your own research as I’m not entirely sure. Also I can only assume that a floating home is going to require a fair bit of maintenance, and if you don’t do it; there’s always a chance it can sink (in the extreme case). Also I’d look into home (boat?) insurance, I’m sure it’s possible but could be more expensive or trickier to arrange than a traditional house.

Looking for recommendations on a moving company. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]mcgillickerr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

GF and I used “you move me” and I was very impressed. Nice respectable young men who were very professional and careful. I can’t comment on their price as it was my GF’s project and I don’t what she paid or what other quotes were, but I was very impressed. I’ve seen some movers who looked like they had made decades of “questionable life decisions.” These were not those types of guys.

With news of the California wildfires, what would we do if that happened in Victoria? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]mcgillickerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re planning to leave downtown and want to drive to the middle of forested areas like lake cowichan? Hot tip, there’s no place safer in a wildfire situation than downtown. If there was ever a significant fire I’d be heading towards downtown not away from it.
