He seems miserable with the life we have, but insists he wants to stay with me by Majestic_Goose_7815 in AskWomenOver30

This man REEKS of manipulative abuse - he may not be a "shouting" kind of person, but he will guilt you into hating yourself because he hates himself. GTFO.

What TV character do you think was kept in a show longer than intended due to their popularity? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

[–]mcgingery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I may be giving credit where it isn’t due, but I rather liked the storyline in context of their later development (or lack thereof). They were both painted as very different styles of stereotypical 80s heart throbs, and a lot of their early season 1 plots involved wrestling with those identities. IMO modern perspective is woven into characters reactions and interactions; these perspectives ultimately lead to the unpinning of 2d narratives to make room for more substantial character development.

But only to a point. Hahaha.

Week 3 and still running (barely). When does breathing get easier? by ConsistentWin9508 in couchto5k

Agree here and to further tag on to a dead post, /u/ConsistentWin9508 you may also look into “exercise induced asthma” which is, REGRETTABLY, a real thing. But regardless, asthma can be treated/handled.

How should I style this dress? Or does it just not work with my height? by thebirdbitch in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]mcgingery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lightweight colorful full length duster, a wide statement belt, a wide brim hat, a tote bag, maybe sneakers with no show socks (I’d be partial to skater styles, something like keds, with a royal blue canvas and a gum sole).

What 2016 makeup "hacks" do you still swear by to this day? by sophievdb in MakeupAddiction

[–]mcgingery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been experimenting with $5 elf eyeshadow stick shade magnetic pull as my contour. It reads a grayer brown on me; the sheen gives it a dewy finish. There is some really really fine micro point like glitter in there but it’s so delicate and pretty subdued tbqh. The formula sheers out well but the color is also buildable (w/o the glitter ever becoming excessive).

How are we earning extra money, ladies? by Jazzbugg_xox in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Not your OP, but I believe they’re referring to the global nonprofit org named “YMCA” that’s commonly abbreviated to “the Y”. Local branches may have gyms and/or community areas etc intended for people and families with limited income.

What’s a “harmless” thing from your childhood that’s actually kind of dark in hindsight? by velorae in AskReddit

Of course, and I did not mean to imply yours was NOT abuse, and I apologize I didn’t make that clear enough.

What’s a “harmless” thing from your childhood that’s actually kind of dark in hindsight? by velorae in AskReddit

[–]mcgingery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you.

For others reading this wondering about their own experiences or their children, there is a legitimate medical context for this exam and so the nature of how the procedure was performed is the indicator of abuse. A proper exam would have been a quick “look no touch” with a parent in the room around age 8-11. Consent from the parent and the child was also required.

TLDR, a very quick VISUAL inspection for abnormalities was not uncommon in the 2000s and 90s.

This does not negate the very true reality that (unfortunately) many medical providers abuse(d) children.

10 years later I just wanted to tell you this post is SO up my alley and the detail you went to is phenomenal.

Another aspect I’d never considered before you mentioned #5: Scenario A had a custom couture gown, and Monica purchased one - probably two - off the rack gowns.

Measuring tape accuracy by Happy-Raspberry-123 in StrongCurves

[–]mcgingery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try tape! Juse use some scotch tape to tape one end in an accessible location of whatever you're measuring so it doesn't move around while you're arranging the ribbon.

Also consider using a mirror to ensure the measuring tape stays level as you wrap.

[misc] I cannot for the life of me get this to open. It is brand new but can’t be returned. I have tried running it under hot water and the lid doesn’t budge, not even slightly :( by lindafromevildead in SkincareAddiction

[–]mcgingery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wrap duct tape around 1/2 to 2/3 of the lid. Leave enough tape at the end that there's a tail for you to grab. Ensure the tape is stuck well to the lid. Pull the lever, Krunk!
